Three French members of the Church of Scientology, suspected of holding a fourth person against their will, were arrested Monday in Nuoro, Sardinia, a local police spokesman told AFP. "The three people belong to the Church of Scientology, whereas the person being held was probably not a member," Fabrizio Mustaro, of the Nuoro Prefecture on the Mediterranean island, told AFP.

I have to admit I didn't find this story on any major news outlets, mostly on blogs and message boards, and in my local newspaper.

I have seen some of those reports. There are a number of possibilities, the two most likely are:

1) It's just some family/friend dispute - Sardinia has a proud tradition of kidnapping - and someone threw in the word Scientology to give it some sinister flavor.

2) The women went cuckoo on Scientology processing and the three people took her to sardinia to "destimulate" ( A scientology trerm meaning that they get better just be leaving them alone, taking care of them making sure they eat right and so on). If you google "Lisa McPherson" you will get an in depth tragic story of this sort of thing.

Yes, I've seen blogs comparing this to the Lisa McPherson case.

One report claimed the "kidnapped" woman was a very wealthy member of the cult who had donated a lot of her money, but who now wanted out. Nothing to substantiate that, though.
