Another question for you evolution buffs

"I’d like to make a general point to mslxl. If you’re trying to understand evolution by plugging away at case studies which have you stumped, you’re going to generate a lot of very interesting threads which nonetheless teach you little."

Ryan O'Dyne,

I'm not trying to understand evolution as much as I am trying to understand you.

Ryan O'Dyne,

If you're trying to understand me by plugging away at case studies in evolution, you're going to generate a lot of very interesting threads which nonetheless teach you little. :)

Perhaps you'd care to broaden the discussion so we might get to the heart of the matter. Or is the skeptic mindset on evolution the sum total of what you're trying to understand? If so, I'd still suggest case studies will have you only nibbling at the banquet.

You might ask about the scientific method, for instance. It's at the heart of evolution.

No. Look. I am familiar with the theory of evolution in general terms. I have read some Darwin, Dawkins, Gould and others. That is not how I use this board. I ask a question that has me intrigued. Admittedly, it's an anecdotal question and I don't know what the state of the art of science says about it. Within 24 to 48 hours, I get a pleasantly diverse range of ideas on it. In the case of this thread, there doesn't seem to be a neat, official answer (yet), although most ideas lean towards my anwer choice (a) (genetic programming). It works nicely for me. It is intellectually stimulating, quick and inexpensive. This is like Google in a way, only sharper -- on some topics. That's all. Don't try to get me arguing about big ideas, I'm not in the mood.

Oops, sorry, I thought I mentioned I know Jack Squat about phototropism (meaning very little to nothing). The mechanisms you mention are no doubt "right" in your simple and "scientific" sense. What I really meant was that:

It should be obvious that since Heaven is in the sky, and all creatures yearn for Heaven, when they are cut off, they will send out more toward Heaven. Even a potato knows that, by golly.

Just Kidding. I don't know if anybody believes that last version or not. I should keep my mouth shut.
