Princesspoppy, there are numerous animal welfare organizations that are sensible and worthy of support in that they work to achieve their goals peacefully through public awareness and by encouraging changes in legislation. You might be better off supporting organizations like the ASPCA or PAWS (Progressive Animal Welfare Society), or even by supporting local no-kill shelters in your area. Your interest probably extends beyond domestic pets, but if you do some research, you can probably find organizations that you'd feel good about supporting.
 
When I worked at UC Davis as a researcher, the ALF attacked our lab. They set our building on fire causing several millions of dollars in damages. The worst part, however, is they took my research vehicle, a 1970 Datsun pick-up, flipped it over, spray painted it, and set it on fire! That really irked me. I loved that truck. 1st. gear, 0-3 mph. Top speed; 40 mph. Nothing was sweeter rapping up a day of field collection by doing the 'Dukes of Hazzard' in a 1970 Datsun pick-up. Damn the ALF!

If you want to help animals, go and help some animals!My family and I go to a local cat adoption agency on weekends and clean out the litterboxes. It is smelly, thankless work, but it needs to be done. The most rewarding part is coming in and finding the empty cages of the cats that have been adopted during the week. Some of the cats are frightened and try to bite and scratch but others are very good kitties and like to be held, and that's also nice. If you don't have the time, donate to one of these local agencies. They need cash for food and for spaying/neutering all of the cats that come through. These agencies need all the assistance they can get so whatever you can do is a big help.

Not really familiar with what's available in the UK, aside from the RSPCa; but you might want to try talking to your local Vet's office. They should be able to point you at some good ones.

Off the top of my head- RSPCA, RSPB, the Blue Cross & local animal rescue centers.

How about the Dr Hadwen Trust?

They fund research into alternatives to the use of animals in medicine. As their FAQ points out, UK law and an EU directive requires alternatives to be used if there are any. So developing such alternatives seems like a rational alternative to PETA's antics over animal testing.

This way, you can protect cute fluffy animals and help advance medical research. It's like killing two b ... er ... it's like finding a cruelty-free alternative to killing two birds with one stone.
 
Shaun - you beat me to it. I saw this story on the news last night and just could not believe it! It truly beggers belief...

If anyone hasn't checked out Shaun's links yet (in brief) animal rights 'activists' dug up an 80(something) year old woman's body and hid it. Then they sent taunting notes to the family. Turns out they had reburied in in a shallow grave in some woodlands. They were upset because the old woman's son was breeding g. pigs for a research lab...

Just looked at the links Shaun posted and actually, they don't mention that they found the old lady's body yesterday (which was why it was on the news).
 
The other problem with animal-rights organizations is when they release Rage-infected chimpanzees, which infect humans and turn them into violent, brutal, mindless, zombie-like monsters.

Sucks when that happens.:D

Lets get PETA to take on drug dealers

The latest method used by dealers to get drugs past police and security at raves: feed the drug to dogs (same as for human mules). Walk them into the event. Then gut the dogs.

I can't post links to the stories coz I'm still newbie on the forums. but try a search. The event was called Teknival held in Chavannes in France. 15 dogs were found evicerated during the clean up after the event. vets confirmed that it is the result of drug dealers smuggling drugs. The method has been used for some time in Holland and Belgium. A 22 year old woman died of an overdose at the event.

come off it, PETA aren't going to go after drug dealers, lets face it, they pick soft targets, why do you think they'll target models for wearing fur, but never target Hells Angels for wearing leather? ;)
