• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

Android Users -

Further impressions of the S10+:

Very crashy - apps that I've used for years with iOS without problems don't run a well as their Android cousins. Probably should try finding apps that are optimized for Android only?

Edge display and the display in general is driving me nuts; popping up, sliding sideways, tabs closing - probably because I'm still trying to use iOS gestures that do something different on the S10. Working on it.

Cell service frequently drops in my building, which has AT&T antennas distributed throughout. iPhone never dropped a call. Ever. Might be just a faulty unit.

Bottom line - Keeping it. It's beginning to grow on me. This is the first day I've been able to really explore it in detail - Haven't even setup email accounts yet.

Anti virus isn't crucial, yet, but is becoming more worthwhile. AVG for Android seems to do the job pretty well.

For music I use a big microSD card with all my my ripped CDs and a music player app, the native one will do fine if you have no particular requirements.

Everything else really depends on what you're planning to do with it?

Welcome to the Android side... I always liked Apple, but I still use Android, because Apple is too expensive for me.

Yes, I'm sure that's it. Come back to the Apple fold before it's too late, AJM8125! Meanwhile, keep using your phone like it's some external drive that you can just dump files onto, LOL! You're missing iTunes already!

For apps, I would recommend you consider installing F-Droid. It's an alternative application manager ("App Store", if you will) that focus on Open Source.
(emphasis mine)

As one who is deeply suspicious of the Google ecosystem (I have no idea of what they're tracking and storing long term) I heartily endorse the recommendation to use F-Droid. In addition, applications from the Google Play store are usually infested with advertisements and could well contain malware.

Install any app from the Play store with suspicion: read its documentation carefully, and as gcmcdorman noted, if it asks for unexpected permissions without saying why, don't install it. I believe there are ways on newer Android versions that allow you to selectively disable permissions after an app has been installed. I'm running an older Android and the permission scheme is effectively binary: "grant everything the app asks for" or "don't install the app."

My apps, all from F-Droid:
  • Atmospheric Logger: monitors a barometer built into the phone and provides a three month graph of prior readings. The graph gets interesting if you take an elevator up several floors in a tall building or drive a significant distance to an area with a different elevation.
  • AudioMeter: provides a readout of how noisy your immediate vicinity is
  • Barcode scanner: works on simple bar codes and 2-D codes like QR code and Data Matrix
  • Open Camera: a very extensive camera app. (I installed it so I could get my Samsung to take a picture by pressing the Volume Down button, which is what some selfie sticks use to trigger a picture. The camera app on new Samsungs might now do this by default.)
  • RPN calculator: calculator that uses Reverse Polish Notation
  • Secret Codes: Displays a list of codes that can be entered on the phone keypad to run various tests
  • Sensor Readout: show all the sensors in your phone (there's an astonishing variety of them) and gives raw readouts of their values
  • StatSat: shows the current location of various GPS satellites (GPS and GLONASS; newer phones probably have the Galileo constellation as well)
  • Thermometer Extended: Shows current temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, and light level.
  • Units: conversion between hundreds of different units: 1 furlong/fortnight is how many millimetres per minute? (9.98). How many US pints ('uspint') in a British firkin ('brfirkin') (86.47)
  • Wikipedia

I'm now one of you. I've escaped.

Apple has finally lost me and I've upgraded to A Galaxy S10+.

Playing with it while it's receiving data from my soon to be departed iPhone X - possibly the most overrated model in the history of iPhones. It's a great camera, and that's about it. So far I'm liking the Samsung, except the finger print scanner is having a problem initializing, there's a fair amount of crapware (maybe it's just that I'm not used to that) and the slick finish on the back get's smudgy real fast - going into a case asap.

Those are minor issues - I'm trying to avoid major ones, and that's where you Android gurus come in, since I have next to no experience with this OS. I seek recommendations for -

Anti Virus / security apps
Music apps, preferably free music
Photo / Video editing apps
Must have apps, any category
Any performance tweaks and tips

Thanks in advance.

Update: Not only are Android Users traitors to Apple™. Now they're also traitors to the good ol' US of A too!

You're welcome.

Stitcher. My favourite app of all time.

Collects pretty much every podcast out there. I can't live without it.
