AMD vs Intel

The two seem to be at war...

Rumour has it that Micro$oft delayed the release of its 64 bit version of Windoze until Intel were ready to market their own processor.

Anyone in the business know the full story?

I don't think that's correct. Microsoft announced it would support AMDs 64-bit extensions to x86 with a seperate version of Windows (they already had a 64-bit version of Server for the Itanium chip) before Intel would even acknowledge the existance of AMD's chips.

After Microsoft announced support for AMD, Intel said they would release 64-bit chips using the 64-bit x86 extentions. I think Microsoft forced Intel to make those chips.

I believe Apple is currently waiting on the 64-bit Core Duo from Intel to release the Intel version of their high-end Desktops. The current G5 models are dual core (and frequently dual processor too, for a total of 4 cores) and I think they want their high-end to stay at 64-bit.

BTW, I don't think Microsoft likes Intel very much any more and is unlikely to do favors for them. Intel is a bit too open-source friendly for Microsoft's liking.

According to Googlefight.com the winner is:

AMD 187,000,000
INTEL 309,000,000
