ALLERGIES

I never had them as a kid, but I've got them now.

What the hell is that? I used to laugh at the people who claimed the 'developed allergies'.

My nose is stuffed up, my eyes water endlessly, and my throat itches.

And what commericals do I see?

"Allegra"

"Flonase"

"Nasonex"

Are they spreading 'allergines', to cause these symptoms, so they can sell us this useless crap?

I think there is some kind of chemical warfare going on right now under all our noses...

"Under our noses"; allergies -- that's great. I love that.

Wait. You're serious, aren't you?

Allergies can come and go. That's well known enough.

It's poetic justice that you learn what it's really like.

***points and laughs*** ha ha!

:)

I have allergies to food and dust and cats and even tobacco.

Damn cig smoke gives me a rash.

I have no allergies which is yet more proof of my absolute perfection and divinity...

You will be allergic to my fist when I catch you, you little runt. C'm 'ere! Why-I-yorta... :D :D

KOTA, enjoy. :) You need to find what it is that you are allergic to first. Then you can avoid or treat for it, or suffer it out. Nasal allergy can be from pollens, dust(mite), animal dander, smoke, perfumes, some chemical fumes - usually airborne stuff.

Rhinocort nasal spray helps (probably prescription, and called another name in the USA), or your usual over-the-counter nasal sprays like Beconase and Nyal nasal decongestant. Eye drops help stop itchiness too (Murine Anti-Allergy).

So much to look forward to... :p

Eos, just what sort of animal is your new avatar??
I thought the craze for furbies was dead. Surely you'd be allergic to it, whatever it is?;)

and what is it with this new trend for everyone to use a pic of their pets as an avatar, anyway?
What's wrong with a self pic, like mine?

lol, I've never had such a reaction to one of my avatars before (not that I've had many).

Check out "killer pup" in the humor forums.

I'm thankfully not allergic to doggies :)

It is kinda a self pic, looking at that expression :D Just as close to a self pic as yours is ;)

I have a bad case.

Are allergy shots a waste of time. I'm willing to give it a go. But i read on here once that someone said it's a waste of time (5 years of your life!)-- you just become allergic to other things.

what causes allergies? is it some hidden virus in our body eating away at our immune system breaking it down? or just our genetics?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood–brain_barrier

However, the blood–brain barrier becomes more permeable during inflammation.

i think this is what is happening to me.

when i get attacked, like what happened yesterday...... (it was extremely windy).

......my blood brain barrier breaks down and my brain is freaking out. bad things that i don't care to discuss are happening inside my brain.

I've had enough and am ready to go in for shots.

Flonase used to work but not any longer and i don't like the thought of sniffing that the rest of my life and getting yeast in my throat (if that is what happens). Plus it misses the swelling in the first part of my nose which is the worst part. I.E., none of the liquid hits the front of my nose.

i read an abstract that magnolia flower herb can help with this condition, i may give it a try.

Int Immunopharmacol. 2010 Aug;10(8):951-8. Epub 2010 May 28.

Traditional Chinese medicine, Xin-yi-san, reduces nasal symptoms of patients with perennial allergic rhinitis by its diverse immunomodulatory effects.

I went through three years of nasal-passages-on-fire unable-to-function-without-daily-antihistamines allergies, but thankfully about a year ago they reduced to an occasional painless runny nose only rarely rising to the previous level. I used to have pain that was similar to a serious burn and water (nothing thick enough to be even close to "mucous") running out of my nose at an alarming rate, and those symptoms often wouldn't resolve without multiple doses of multiple antihistamines, making me unfit for work probably one day out of four. Hopefully that's over for good.

The idea being that if your immune system has no germs to fight, it stays in shape by attacking your body.

yes, i've heard of that one..... believe in it.

but that must be one of many reasons. i wonder what mine could be or if that's it.... wonder. my father has allergies --sometimes(they go away).

the link posted says that if the mother has them it is more likely the child will have them. none of my siblings has them...and i have 3 siblings.

I've had allergies all my life and when the pollen index rose to astronomical levels even people who had never had allergies had them.

My Uncle went to the doctor and they at first thought he was developing copd or emphesema but it turned out to be asthma.

Arth, as we age out childhood antibodies wear off- to germs as well as changes to our allergies.

Less sanitation will keep your immunities up. Think of infections as inoculations, from allergies too.

I think the Hygiene Hypothesis concept is effective, but as untrue as the phrase "evolution wants". It's probably an over simplification. But it is a hypothesis, some more scientificalness may get to the root cause.

I developed allergies in the last four years as well.

My IgE levels are always running at around 150 IU/ml, and the last time I checked them, they were up to 200 IU/ml.

I have had some specific allergens tested, the last time they all came back negative, but there is no point as it is environmental and there isn't any way I could avoid it.

I take Chlorphenamine once a day and also one squirt of Nasonex.

I also had negative scratch and prick tests, though I had a significant and long delayed (one day) reaction to the cockroach test, which my allergist, who is quite old, said he had never seen before. Around here, when the tests come up negative the allergist shrugs and says "You're allergic to Florida". Based on experience, I'm definitely allergic to some kind of leaf mold but that can't be the only thing.

Knowing nothing about immunology, I suspect that your nasal passages can have a strong reaction to something that causes almost no reaction for the skin on your shoulder.
