2000 Mules

Many of the grassroots types seem to be people who may not have spent much time in school or were largely home schooled. Or maybe even if they did, they didn't pay attention and let stuff like football help them coast through. Perhaps I am indulging in cliche.
The Proud Thickwits.
The more educated ones are merely feigning empathy to wangle positions of power among the "salt of the Earth".
The Shameless Grifters.

Add guns and you have the GOP.

A debate wouldn't even be in the running. :(

In the Bill Maher 'Hershel Walker' video posted here (in the Hershel Walker thread) Maher talks about what drives the Republican voter. The ones who still say trump did a 'great job,' that Biden 'stole the 2020 election.' That support morons like trump, emptyg, bobo, Walker and now Kari Lake. How a piece-of-garbage film like "2000 Mules" can be taken seriously. Maher asks, how in a nation that's supposed to be fairly sophisticated can a large number of Americans (Republicans) think in this way? Maher then answers his own question and while I think there's a lot more to it, it seemed to me to be a pretty good answer.

Am I the only one who noticed that Maher's example of something American rightwingers are pushing back against was a Canadian teacher in a Canadian school? I mean, if your point is that the American right is nominating complete ******** as a response to what the American left is doing, don't you undermine your point by having to rely on an example that isn't done by American leftists, or even Americans, or even in America?

Yes I noticed that too, Maher used a film clip of a Canadian teacher in a Canadian school to illustrate American right wingers' opposition with transgender people...opposition to what exactly? Being employable as school teachers? I thought that was the weakest part of his presentation. But Maher's conclusion, "The worse a candidate is, the more it says to Democrats, ‘Do you see how much we don’t like what you are selling?'" seemed pretty much on point.

But that isn't what they are saying. at all. They are very directly, loudly, and publicly saying "we're against whatever the democrats are selling".

They were nominating drooling idiots before the current moral panic about transgender people.

Here's a question. When I went to high school there were mandatory courses called things like Civics or Our Democracy or something that were about how government works, not in a partisan way but about the levels and branches of government, how officials are chosen and their responsibilities, how laws are made and changed, etc. They might have included practical exercises, like writing to the mayor or a congressman. Do kids take classes like that today? In listening to how Trumpers' describe their world view, and some non-Trumpers too, it sounds like many don't actually understand what government is for.

Public schools still have civics classes. At least in Florida, which I assume is pretty much the bottom of the barrel.
American public schools have issues, but the teachers and administrators usually try very hard for very little money to educate kids as well as possible

To add a bit to Upton Sinclair’s 1934 quote

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when others have convinced him that his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

ETA
Or, as I said in another thread, Groucho Marx summed it up quite lyrically in Horse Feathers
I don't know what they have to say
It makes no difference anyway
Whatever it is, I'm against it
No matter what it is or who commenced it
I'm against it

Your proposition may be good
But let's have one thing understood:
Whatever it is, I'm against it
And even when you've changed it or condensed it
I'm against it

Dinesh discovers that when called to name names you can’t just list organizations you don’t like and accuse them of voter fraud. The book for 2000 Mules that was supposed to put names to the people being accused in the film was recalled and is now back with many names removed and what little there is watered down.

https://www.npr.org/2022/10/25/1131...souzas-2-000-mules-book-after-it-was-recalled

Ah ha! And possibly, "Oh. Oh"!

The film and the recalled version of the book said that True the Vote used a database from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) to make this connection.

ACLED objected to that characterization, and requested a correction from D'Souza.

"This is not the type of analysis you can use ACLED data for, and it is highly unlikely that these conclusions have any basis in fact," a spokesperson for ACLED previously told NPR. The spokesperson said every reference to ACLED in the recalled version of the book was "incorrect or misleading."

Now, ACLED does not appear anywhere in the book. Several paragraphs that attempted to rebut NPR's earlier fact-check about the ACLED data have been removed. And claims that the "mules" had connections to antifa or BLM are gone, too.

"ACLED requested a correction from the publisher based on the incorrect references included in the recalled version of 2,000 Mules, and we are happy to see that these references have ultimately been removed from the final copy of the book," said Sam Jones, ACLED's head of communications. "Our data do not support any of the claims or conclusions that were previously linked to ACLED."

The changes to the book may reflect some concern by D'Souza and Regnery about possible legal trouble.

Down to 150 mules and counting. :whistling

Is that the pitter-patter of millions of GOP feet running away from Dinesh I can hear? :D

Distancing themselves from his personality, certainly; but make no mistake, they will continue to parrot his books claims, merely divorcing them from the context of where they came from.

He's not slowing down. This is from D'Souza's Facebook page yesterday. Nothing about his latest problems with "2000 Mules." Like nothing has happened. Now it's Google.

donald trump appeared on D'souza's podcast this week.
D’Souza, whom the former president pardoned in 2018 after D’Souza pleaded guilty in 2014 to making an illegal donation to a GOP Senate candidate, asked Trump: “It seems to me that what you’re saying is that you think that there was cheating all different ways. ‘2,000 Mules’ may have captured one of the ways, but there were other forms of cheating going on as well, correct?”

“Yeah, ‘2,000 Mules’ was one way,” Trump replied. “That was a very conclusive way because you were taking government tapes. ... And then, of course, they voted six, seven, eight times. As much as they could in the local area. Some of the people went back, I guess they said 28 times in one day, to vote at different places.” Link to Yahoo News report

If you want to believe...no reason not to. Just ask donald trump. But does D'Souza understand this is all just spin and tactics; does he really believe this stuff? That's truly scary. :(

I haven't brought out my favourite Voltaire quote for some time but here it is: “Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.”

I loved Trump's "They say" bit. "People" and "They" feature quite often in Trump's lies.

Yes, I do think D'Souza believes his own crap. He's nuts.

So true and we've seen it play out in history time and time again.

When he started he didn't. But there's one thing common to dictators and con artists, in the end they believe their own lies.

interesting twist related to the 2000 mules crew. from what i can gather true the vote, the group responsible for a lot of the claims made in the film, filed various ballot harvesting related complaints with the georgia secretary of state. so they opened an investigation, and asked for the various names and documents they cited in the complaint. true the vote is refusing to provide any of this and tried to withdraw the complaints, but the state is refusing to stop the investigation and is taking it to a judge to force them to comply with a subpoena.

will they have to admit it's all made up? 2000 mules was a big one for the deranged, this could be interesting
