I must say I am very disappointed. I was once a very big fan of Michelle Shocked. I loved her fusion of country and bluegrass roots with great lyrics and what I considered to be very progressive sensibilities. Indeed, when I first saw her in concert, it appeared to me that her fan-base was heavily populated with women that I would euphamistically describe as "feminist".

And yeah, I knew she'd become a born-again Christian, but I had no idea that their brand of hatred had penetrated her brain so deeply until I read how she just went on an anti-gay rant. As a testiment to her recent lobotomization, she chose San Francisco as the place to release this tirade, effectively clearing out the nightclub where she was playing. She's also had about a dozen dates cancelled since then.

It's very sad to see someone you respect go over the edge like this, and while I will still listen to her old music, I won't buy any more. Chalk up another victory for Christian "love".

1990: "I resent like hell that I was maybe 18 years old before I even heard the 'L' word. I mean, that's understood, growing up sheltered in a Mormon environment. But it would have made all the difference for me had I grown up knowing that the reason I didn't fit in, was because they hadn't told me there were more categories to fit into."

2008: “There are some inconvenient truths that I’m now a born again, sanctified, saved-in-the-blood Christian. So much of what’s said and done in the name of that Christianity is appalling. According to my Bible, which I didn’t write, homosexuality is immoral. But homosexuality is no more or less a sin than fornication. And I’m a fornicator with a capital F."

2011: “Who drafted me as a gay icon? You are looking at the world’s greatest homophobe. Ask God what He thinks.”

2013: "You are going to leave here and tell people 'Michelle Shocked said God hates faggots."

Big news locally - she's pretty much PNG'ed from any music venue in the S.F. bay area.

Dang. Joan Jett is going to have to give her a talkin' to.

Too bad. I don't know much about the pop scene, but I liked some of her (old, I guess) stuff.
