What book is everyone writing right now?

It's a screen play. I'm not sure how to review that type of work.

I'll look for some sections in it that I can tackle.

Well - sort of.

I wrote the dialog in screenplay form...just so it's easier to write and follow (for me). That's something I can always change.

As I just finished my epic Three Men in a Tub I thought I'd revisit this thread. It's about three men, thirty women, and two hundred and twenty five aliens, some infighting, a little mystery, comedy, tragedy, and some small twists. If anyone is interested in a read just PM me and I can send out a PDF, RTF, or DOC.

Also, was reading my first post here: http://www.internationalskeptics.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8229037&postcount=154 and I saw a Family Guy where Stewie and Brian go back in time over and over until the yard is full of dozens of copies of them. I would have to really check dates to see who had the idea first.

The whole writing thing (as far as books) has really gone on the back burner over the last few months. I've started developing a play with a friend, and am really enjoying the collaborative writing process, and I've got two feature films being developed as co-writing projects too.

But even those don't get much time in, as I'm also 1sting a feature film at the moment, in the last week of prep, so I don't have much in the way of time at all!

What film? When do we get to find out names?

In the mean time. SG reports more progress. I'd come to a road block, nothing exciting was occurring in my story and then, another breakthrough.

It's working, the story's working, and I'm still improving as a writer. :)

The film is called "Ghost Bride" but I don't think it has an IMDB entry up just yet.
It's a NZ/Chinese horror/romance.

Awesome! Keep it up.

That's exciting.

RANT! [sidetrack] Search engines, how annoying.

I try the search on Google and get pages of "Corpse Bride". I try it on Bing. I get a dozen hits with ghost in the title, I see one that is a review on Amazon for "Ghost Bride" DVD. It even says, "Ghost Bride" on the review page. But when I click on the DVD, it's really called "Ghost Whisperer".

Bastards. OK fine sometimes its nice to get near misses on a search. But misleading links, those piss me off. They suggest more and more corporate control of what we have access to on the Net, a back door around Net neutrality. [/sidetrack]

So, I see a lot of material on real ghost brides, the ones who are murdered to be with a deceased groom. Is that the subject matter?

Yup. In traditional Chinese culture an unmarried woman has no family to care for her spirit, because women are supposed to be tended in the afterlife by their husband's family, not their own. Likewise, a daughter-in-law is supposed to tend to the mother's spirit, so having a son who died without marrying is also a serious issue. Thus the ghost wedding tradition whereby someone would be found to marry the dead person. Usually this meant either a recently deceased person, or a living person who would continue to live a chaste life as if they were a widow.

Of course, given the subject matter, it's ripe for horror. I don't know that anyone ever actually killed people to become a ghost bride (it's pretty clear a woman could marry a deceased man, and would then join his family and be treated exactly like any other daughter-in-law), so the whole killing thing seems redundant, I suppose unless you needed someone to marry against their will?

I think it's being conflated with the Indian tradition of sati/suttee where a recently widowed woman would kill herself on her husband's funeral pyre.

Well, I took a break to do a little more research on pumas, but I think I have a grasp enough of their behavior at this point to get back to full speed ahead. Up to page 25. Shooting still for 100.

Thanks for the plugs! I just got the mock-up of the cover for "Cornerstone" a few days ago. One last run-through on the editing side of things and it'll be out...and then what? I'm still in 'stall' mode. Nothin' happening up there...

Funny about Amazon reviews - there should be at least fifteen, but some of them disappear from time to time. I have no idea why. I'll just go look and *poof* one of them is gone.

How's everyone else plugging along? Any new cover art? New chapters?

Lots of new chapters, I'm struggling with the current one a bit trying to put emotion down in words without sounding hokey or boring the reader.

So will Cornerstone be out before the third Stolen book? Is it the same publisher?

I like the tease, "will he be sorry he built it?" :)

Yes, Cornerstone will be out first. The publisher is not moving on the third book, and I'm going to ask them to release it to me soon. I'm "going it alone" for Cornerstone to see how that works out (with professional help, e.g. the cover). We shall see.

Okay so filming has almost finished up on Ghost Bride and today I did some writing for the first time in months. Also the film now has an IMDB page and a Facebook page!

It's a bit odd coming back to the writing as it's been so long since I did anything on the project, but I think I'll settle in as long as I stick at it. A couple of things inspired me to get back into it; for one I saw the first episode of season 3 of Game of Thrones and secondly I finished the Cormac McCarthy book I'd been reading and started a new fantasy novel. It's been a long while since I read a serious fantasy novel as I've been broadening my reading a bit and catching up on the Discworld series, but I think I find it easier to write when I'm reading the genre.

I've also got back to reading the last few chapters of a friend's book; we've been exchanging chapters on our respective works for the last couple of years which has hugely assisted my own writing, and with everything else I hadn't had time to offer him any critiques in a long while. Reading his stuff definitely helped inspire me to get the current chapter done so I can send it off to him for feedback.

I'll definitely look up the film! It sounds interesting from the description - something I've never actually heard of, from what I can recall.

'Cornerstone: Raising Rook' is out in ebook format for Kindle and should be out in paperback soon - whew. I'm now working on a related short story for a charity anthology, and I'd better get a move on, because there's a due date. I've only got bits & parts that I need to pull together, plus I have four books to read for my review group, plus I'm still working on my pharmacy tech certification, plus it's the busy season at work, and there's dog training...you know the scoop. I just have to sit down and do it.

I do find getting back into writing is more difficult if I've taken a significant break. It's something that works best with regular exercise. Good luck dusting off the cogs and keep us informed about the film's progress...

ETA: is this the correct one? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2785162/

Cornerstone: Raising Rook is in print. Wow, so cool. Do you make more off the print book or the Kindle version? I'm thinking of getting the paperback.

BTW, I like the cover art. It's that wave that does it for me.

Just read the "Cornerstone" intro. I've been working out my first chapter and debating the prologue thing. So much advice not to use one, yadda yadda. But the way you did it works great. I also have important backstory where my protag is young, but the story takes place later, starting when she's 17. It's not quite the same, there's no key thing that happens at that age. But she fantasizes about herself and that's something she doesn't do later. I may call it a prologue, I may label the chapter, "Seven years earlier", I don't know yet. But the fact you jumped in time makes so much sense as a prologue, I just wanted to tell you that.

:)

Thanks. The paperback, the price of which is set by Createspace, is quite expensive at $11.25, so I'd get the ebook if I were you (unless you met me in person, in which case I sell the paperbacks at a discount since I get them as an author for a reduced price). The cover's nice on the paperback, but there aren't any maps or anything that make it necessary.

I've heard both ways on prologues, but I also used one in "Stolen" (labeled as Chapter One, though). Sometimes there's backstory that just doesn't fit anywhere else. I'd rather not read long retrospectives in the main text, myself, so I tend to throw a bunch of it together into a prologue. Besides, it gave me a better opportunity, in this case, to introduce the father. So, I don't know - prologues don't bother me, personally.
