Hello,

I found new pictures of the nasa's Curiosity rover on the webpage of NASA Today:

Why does nasa hide information from the public?

ALIENS!!!!! Or software faults. Or Martians with a paintbrush. If there were signs of aliens then NASA just wouldn't release the photos. How dumb do you think that they are, Maarten? As dumb as conspiracy theorists?

Can we just correct that to "If there were signs of aliens and for some bizarre, illogical reason NASA didn't want to yell it from the rooftops but rather hush the whole thing up, then they wouldn't release the photos"?

Seriously, Maartenn100, did you read the text which accompanies the first picture you linked to?

I mean, did you even glance at the caption right at the top which includes the word "mosaic"? That is a clue.

Perhaps you skipped right to the end, which states flat out "The black areas indicate images not yet returned by the rover". That is a much bigger clue.
 
For those who want to use the strawman argument: I'm not talking about 'aliens' or 'civilisations' or ... I just made an observation: NASA is hiding something from the public, that's obvious. The question is: why and what?
 
Did the 'mozaics' on Google Earth never reached Earth? I'm sorry, but, I don't believe that.
Answer me: why are the black mozaics on Google Earth hidden? Because they never returned? they travelled to Venus?

One thing at a time: do you now understand that the gaps in the composite picture NASA posted are there because high resolution images of those areas are not yet available?


If that's OK, maybe we can move on to the Google Earth images. Now I'm hardly an expert, but as a mere user of Google Earth those look to me exactly like what I'd expect to see if there were no high resolution image available at that particular point so the next lower resolution image was used instead.

What do you think, and why?
 
One of the possibilities is also non infinite panoramic cameras movements.
The camera can not go full 360° and also up and down full 180°, because there are mechanical and physical limits to the movement. The panorama, once put on a flat surface to display will show black regions where the camera couldn't see anything due to these limits....

About google earth on mars, we don't really have full coverage of mars with satellites, so it's obvious you'll have regions where the image is different than other regions (called "tampering field" in your captions), if taken by two satellites with two different cameras, etc. Nothing to hide, it's just that the information is not there to display....

Ah, also, Joseph P Skipper is full of crap.

Why do you suppose the places where the data is incomplete are colored black?
 
Ok, I admit, I didn't read the whole text on the website. But, it didn't explain the hidden parts on Google Earth. And I thought: a professional institute like NASA would wait until it had the whole image. It doesn't seem professional to me to show a picture like the 'picture of today'. I also saw the pictures from Google Earth, so I thought (very reasonable): are they hiding something?

Other arguments to hide something:
This is not only about science: it's about territory, kolonisation, fuel fields and technology.
Soon Russia, China and other countries will be on Mars too. They will want their part of the deal too.
So, is it possible NASA (the VS) will not let see us the whole picture yet, when rich fields of fuel are involved. That seems reasonable to me.
Mars is American territory right now, so they don't have to share everything.

the Curiosity rover is at very exciting positions now, and NASA releases images as soon as they have anything, and they release raw images.
If the publication you saw this image in took its pictures from raw images or non finished mozaics, it's the fault of the publication, not NASA. NASA releases everything, you're free to look into NASA's websites and see everything for yourself.

If NASA waited days before releasing photos so they don't have flwas, conspiracy theorists like mr Skipper would also freak out and claim conspiracy. It's apparently a lose-lose situation, whatever NASA does, you will complain ?

Fuel fields? Fuel for what? Do you have any idea how much it would cost to bring back one kilogram of anything from Mars?
 
What sort of fuel? Do you appreciate that fossil fuels on Earth are the result of a) abundant life and b) hundreds of millions of years of plate tectonics, neither of which appears to exist on Mars?
 
I don't complain, but I'm sceptic when colonisation and new territory is involved. It's not all about science. It's also about geopolitics.
