A letter, from scriptwriter Joe Esztehas to Mel Gibson has been leaked, apparently, alleging some outlandish behaviour on the part of the latter.

It states dissatisfaction with the fact that there was no response to a script submission, but goes to to mention visits to Mel's property where he supposedly railed against various people, often Jews, at times screaming, at others even chasing guests out of his house.

If accurate, it paints a disturbing picture, disturbing even by the standards of what has happened in the past few years, e.g. DUI, public rants, etc.

Not quoting, as most of it is probably NSFW, in parts both vile and bizarre. Though this part I think is telling:

"I have all this rage and I don't know why. I've tried therapy, but no-one can tell me why I'm so angry."

I would like to know where it comes from, too.

As to this letter, there may be no corroboration now, or ever. Perhaps all we can say is that the alleged events fit a pattern of behavious which has been seen previously.

A fiction author in an industry known for unoriginality leaks an uncorroborated narrative that is both titillating and consistent with previous narratives?

It sounds so truthy it must be true!

As much as I dislike Mel, the letter seems incredibly fishy -- it's not even internally consistent.

Given Esztehas' stated reasons for the collaboration, why would he blithely continue to participate given Mel's supposed ongoing antisemetic outbursts?

He says in the letter:

I felt trapped. This was a project initiated by you. I couldn't legally or morally take it from you and write it as a spec script or for someone else.

Whether or not that's true, I don't know.

It often occurs to me that while extreme wealth and power can shield from harm, it can also shield from help.

Be it Howard Hughes or Mel Gibson, if they were regular folks they'd at least have a chance for someone saying "you're mentally ill, we're giving you treatment."

Of course there would also be the chance of ending up untreated, living under a bridge. So maybe slowly going insane in your mansion, surrounded by servants, isn't so bad in the scheme of things.

This is news, how?

Well, perhaps I've been living under a rock, but I didn't think his previous exploits were quite as severe (even if they still tipped the offensiveness meter into the red) as what was described here.

As one Twitter commentator noted this morning, it would make a good movie. Then it struck me just now: given Mel has done Hamlet, maybe he's getting into character for an upcoming Lear adaptation.

If "kookoo for cocopuffs" made it to the DMSR, Mel is *quite* unwell.
