Due to recent events and me wanting to eventually touch base w/individuals on the subjects of our new technologies; I finally decided to start my nano technology thread.

Nanotechnology covers pretty much every thing you can think of from new raw materials from old raw materials, new computer science, to even marketing and shipping.

Basically, it can be used in every aspect of life and non-life.

Nano particles can be harmful

So what do you guys think about it? Will this be the end of medicinal medicine (pills have many unwanted side effect and is far from perfect) as the future progresses?

I'm part of a center working on developing nanomedicines for cancer therapy.

I am not sure what you mean by "end of medicine" as nanoparticles and nanotechnology is one of the new frontiers in medicine.

You are part of an interesting and exciting field of technology! If they would have touched base on nanotechnology when I was in school I would have probably tried my crack at getting involved somehow.

What would one need to learn to be able to get involved in this field? I have always been a fan of science and have seriously thought about going back to school to get involved somehow.

I read Eric Drexler's book back in the day, and couldn't get past the issue of waste heat. He totally ignored it and to me it seemed like a major issue. Has this problem been solved?

a bit. In the short term, people won't see any difference. Cancer medicine medicine has already been using "nanotech" for the past 15+ years. Look into Doxil(R), which is a pegylated liposome delivering doxirubicin.

I think the greatest change that nanotech may spurn on is personalized medicine. We may be able to create drug loaded nanovehicles that are personally tuned to the exact needs of a person's specific disease state. Obviously, though, such highly specified drug dosage forms is a regulatory nightmare. How does the government ensure safety (or do testing) on a drug that is expected to only work on a person with a very specific genetic background?

What would one need to learn to be able to get involved in this field? I have always been a fan of science and have seriously thought about going back to school to get involved somehow.

A PhD in engineering (E.g., chemical, materials, electrical, mechanical, biomedical) or physics or chemistry. Those are probably the most logical entry points into the field.

I'm looking forward to the day when each person will have his own synthetic little biome of self-replicating nanomachines tending everything. Couple that with better understanding of the human genome, and the possibilities are near endless. Moving to a different climate? Have your nanobots tweak your genes to make your physiology more in tune with the environs. Working odd hours? Have the nanobots flood your brain with the proper chemicals for the first week to keep you awake and alert when you need to be. Catastrophic injury? The wee buggers will seal it up tight, combat infection, and leave a smiley-faced scar.
