I've been without medical coverage for quite some time now. Last year, at open enrollment, we could almost, but not quite, afford to get health coverage. In the year since then, my wife's gone to a lot of trouble to arrange our finances so that this time around, we could.

But just today, we learned what it would now cost us,. thanks to the massive, fraudulent scam that Obama and his accomplices have forced on the American people.

The cost has been almost doubled. We can't afford it this year, either, in spite of all my wife's best efforts.

I don't know what we will do when the mandate kicks in. Being legally-required to buy something does not magically cause the money to flow into our budget to pay for it.

and there is no program to help those that have not enough money? I am pretty sure if you have not enough money, you will get help so you can afford it.

Double? That is a pretty massive increase. Most health plans are increasing about 10%-14% as has been happening regularly this decade. One factor that can make it seem more is that when offered through an employer it is not uncommon for the employer to swallow the costs one year and then make it up for it the next. My company swallowed the full rate increase last year and this year the full increase is being put on me. I think the full subsidies kick in for people who make up to 140% of the federal poverty level, so you should look into that. If it is just you and your wife on one income that would be about 20K/year (or more depending on the state). You might qualify for other poverty programs as well that could help free up funds. I know a few people that I work with that fall under the guidelines for qualifying because of their kids even though at the same pay I by far do not.

Personally I would still prefer a single payer system where we tax and spend for everyone like the NHS in the UK.

Man, you must be PO'd that the public option didn't make it through. Or that conservatives blocked UHC.

That's the free market part of the plan. It works in Germany. We could have tried the Canadian health monopoly plan. It's cheaper overall.

But even countries with government RUN healthcare usually have private clinics. Acupuncture and such.

Who wants to bet that if Congress, with the new electees, manages to undo every piece of all the healthcare legislation it passed, that the private insurers will drop their prices back to what they were?

Yeah, I wouldn't hold my breath on that either. Insurance companies exist to make money for themselves. The more they collect and the less they pay out, the better it is for them. It might be the only industry that succeeds best by not doing what they're paid for. I must be a communist because for some strange reason I simply don't trust a company whose primary motivation is to avoid paying for services to pay for services.

There was really nothing in the legislation to make a serious effort to cut costs to anything like the % of GDP any other nation spends on healthcare and a number of whom get superior results. When you start changing how 3-6% or so of GPD is spent you will hurt a large number of people and there is not the political will to do that.
