Should smoking be banned in NYC parks?

one time i was in a friend's car when she threw a butt out the window.

i ask why she doesn't use the ashtray in her car, and she says that she hates stinking her car up with that trash.

Ugh, I hate the "think of the children" argument.

What about people who swear in public? Isn't that bad for children? What about music that encourages drug use? I've been at City sponsored events that had Grateful Dead music playing.

Why not close down fast food places?

I know Bloomberg is an ex-smoker and has a bug up his butt about it, but there are more pressing issues with the City right now.

I don't even smoke and this annoys me. It is just stupid pandering.

If you ask me, all tobacco products should be banned altogether in a modern high civilization, not only in public parks.

No one did. I won't speak for everyone else (because I respect individuals), but I already have a mother. You aren't going to replace her.

Just imagine, banning someone from smoking while taking a stroll in Pelham Bay Park or Inwood Hill Park. These parks are huge!!

Well, since Inwood Hill Park is mostly 14-year-olds smoking pot, I'm pretty sure it's already been banned.

I agree with banning smoking in indoor public spaces, but this is just crazy.

Whether they should or shouldn't ban it, it probably will be. The gov't doesn't want to lose its tax income and the benefits it gets from its relationship with Big Tobacco, but at the same time, the public pressure to outlaw smoking is getting insane.

I'm anxiously waiting for the first case of a social services incident involving removing kids from a smoking household for their protection from smokers....

I smoke, and take care when around those who don't. I don't light up around them. I hate breathing second hand smoke myself, I choose when to poison myself, it's not someone else's decision to make. If you can't walk in a park without poisoning those around you, stay the hell out. It's a smokers choice to smoke, forcing others to suffer because of it is just plain selfish.

I can't wait for marijuana to be fully legalized, so in 20 years we can see liberals looking at the inevitable smoking marijuana and lung cancer issue, wherein their eyes glaze over and their heads explode ala Scanners.

"Cannot lord over the people, but must lord over the people! Cannot lord over the people but must lord over the people!" (blam!)

Its funny, how Michael Bloomberg brings out the Libertarian in me.

We're all libertarian when we disagree with the current administration.

Good on ya' Parky! I'm happy to see you embrace the liberty argument. :)

A red herring segued into a non sequitur. Well done.

BTW, smoking is banned on the beaches here in Chicago. It wasn't due to secondhand smoke though, but because smokers think the world is their ashtray and just flick their butts on the sand and in the water.

Seriously smokers, what's up with that? What makes you think this is OK? Most of you wouldn't throw your bag of fast food trash out the car window or on the sidewalk, but you all (don't lie now) throw your butts any old place with nary a thought.

This liberal wants marijuana to be as legal as tobacco. My cranium is safe. I sometimes wonder how the people who are content with the current state of alcohol laws and MJ laws keep theirs together, though.

Hell I wouldn't mind a ban. This whole "Well if you are by a smoker then you should move somewhere else!" thing doesn't cut it. The smoker is the one who is engaging in a behavior that directly effects another person if they are within range.

Care to differentiate this from the pedestrian and the motorist?

On any given day an automobile has a more adverse effect on the environment than any smoker. That's a fact.

Its a stupid idea that will accomplish nothing.
First they came for the trans fatty acids, but I said nothing, because I don't consume trans fatty acids.

... then they came for the high cholesterol diners but I said nothing because I was young and healthy.

... then they came for the people with high-stress jobs but I said nothing because I enjoyed working in a pressure cooker.

... then they came for the smokers and I said nothing because I was in the hospital going through my second bypass.

(Is that how that ends?)

That seems excessive.

Littering is already illegal.

Would you ban all packaging because some people toss it into the street? Ban dogs because some owners don't pick up after them?

I think your confirmation bias is showing.

Actually, dogs are banned from some beaches for just that reason - who wants to risk walking through dog mess or their children playing with it?

I don't know yet
