Aren't sunspots really just whirlpool shadows?
I asked this ridiculous question at another forum and received this reply.
"No: sunspots are points on the Sun's surface where magnetic field lines reconnect. Think of the Sun's magnetic field as being like loops reaching out from the surface; the sunspots represent the "anchor" points. Funnily enough, sunspots only look dark in comparison with the surrounding area. If you could see them shining on their own, their brightness would exceed that of an arc lamp. "
