I think she's going to do worse than scare moderates, I'm starting to think Palin is so awful that she's actually energizing the DEMOCRATIC base almost as much as the Republican.
 
Only a one word misquote. Palin said "support" rather than the actual word, "help". There is a world of difference between the two quotes, and of course, the quote itself is rhetorical. Nobody would argue that Albright would say, "There is a place in hell for women who don't help other women commit bank robbery, " or "There is a place in hell for women who don't help other women screw the country."

Oh, and just so nobody blames Starbucks, they got it right. I'm going to assume Sarah just doesn't take good notes, not that she deliberately misqoted.

To provide some context, Palin was misquoting Madeleine Albright, who actually said: "There is a special place in hell for women who don't help other women."

"help" not "support". She wasn't making some crass statement about women who don't support the political ambitions of other women, she was making an admonition to women who turn a blind eye to the plight of women who are in need of serious help. The statement was initially made in reference to discussion about whether raping women in a war zone should be considered a war crime.

Palin completely missed the irony in using Albright's line: It's women just like Palin for whom Albright envisions that special place in hell.

Well, I don't want to wait for the newspaper. This is how it looks to me:

  1. Implication that, if women don't vote for her, they don't "support" her
  2. More tenuous implication that if women don't vote for her, they should go to Hell
  3. Deflecting her own incendiary use of the comment by attributing it, simultaneously, to both conventional wisdom (the Starbucks coffee cup) and a truly respected figure (Secretary Albright)
  4. Pre-emptively blaming any negative fallout on "the newspaper"

What to conclude from this? I conclude that she'll say darn near anything to get elected (not unusual) but, more troubling, that she refuses to take responsibility for anything she says. Honestly, this nonsense comment comes with three built-in evasions. I can't think of anything else like it.

In the off-chance she has any supporters left here, I'd appreciate any explanation of why this behavior should be treated as acceptable.

How can you miss that she is trying to make the point that the left says that women should support other women, but they are all over her and hate her and don't support her? How the hell can you miss the greater point that it's hypocrisy for the left to claim to be in support of "women" (in general) when the truth is they only support women who agree with them politically? THAT was what she was trying to say, and I strongly suspect most of you know that, but will continue to rush and characterize it as something else. Just as Palin suggested.

Every day I ask myself if people could be more intellectually dishonest, and I'm never let down.

Though I am flattered that Governor Palin has chosen to cite me as a source of wisdom, what I said had nothing to do with politics. This is yet another example of McCain and Palin distorting the truth, and all the more reason to remember that this campaign is not about gender, it is about which candidate has an agenda that will improve the lives of all Americans, including women. The truth is, if you care about the status of women in our society and in our troubled economy, the best choice by far is Obama-Biden.

If Palin was trying to make a point about the hypocrisy of the left, she couldn't have been further from the mark. Get friggin' real, dude.

Let's take your interpretation at face value. Okay, so Palin was "ridiculing" the idea that women have a special duty to stand up for the human rights of other women, and pointing out that people who agree with that idea but do not support the McCain-Palin ticket are "hypocrites." WHAT?!?

Wel, DUH! Of course the artic witch is misusing the quote. Do you think Albright wanted women to support other women who are cool with a policy that favors rapists? How does that help other women. Palin hurt other women deeply, she deprived law enforcement of some evidence to help identify and prosecute some of the woirst enemies of women in their communities. For that she should dwell in one of the vilest pits of hell.

I feel sorry for Trig. Momma isn't up to the job, from what I have seen. She is far less bright than her station in life would suggest. Her parenting skills are seriously in question, given the performance of her two eldest kids.

I have yet to read any policy statements that when implemented will be limited to people (or women) of a specific political party. As a woman, I choose to support the candidate who best represents the issues that are important to me. I reviewed tax plans, health care plans, funding for autism research, policy for Iraq, etc. and made a choice.

I am deeply offended that a woman would suggest that because I made a choice that does not support her that I should be condemned to the worst punishment she can imagine. This same woman who, also believes that other women should not have a choice in whether to carry a pregnancy to term, wants to shame me into giving up another choice I'm constitutionally guaranteed?


I wonder what sort of outcry there would have been if Barack stood in front of the microphone and stated that there was a special place in hell for blacks who didn't support other blacks?

As I mentioned before, the original quote is rhetorical. Nobody, and especially not Albright, would agree that women should help (or support) women in every single situation. I won't argue with someone that takes Albright to task for making such a silly, unqualified statement. When they do so, I hope they will remember to take Palin task as well.

I only wish one person had had the nerve to ask Palin, "And do you think Albright was right?"

Palin is practicing "gotcha" campaigning. I hope she won't complain about the press using "gotchas" on her in the future.

When reading some of these responses, I get this image in my mind of someone walking away from the computer to get a cup of coffee, confident in the prejudcial prowess they just displayed in another scathing, non-sensical JREF post.
