So, this sooper-seekrit group has schemed to bring one of the forum's most popular writers (if you go by Language Award nominations) to TAM for the first time.

Dr. A has accepted the offer of assistance. Yay!

I'm not the leader of this movement. The sooper-seekrit leader, who wishes to remain anonymous, is Hutch. The big sweetie!

Funds are being collected to defray Dr. A's traveling expenses. If you wish to assist in any way, or just tell Hutch what a great guy he is, or offer Dr. A helpful advice about the heat in Las Vegas in June or how to avoid Gun-waving air marshals, jump in.

That is all. Remember, this is seekrit...

let's face it, we ALL LOVE HUTCH!

not just for this, but for his many and constant kindnesses. As in renting a VAN so he can ferry people to and from the airport? Forcing me to face my roller coaster fear? Being a real sweetie when I tried to pass him off as the log rolling champion of Alabama (and having that announced to the crowd at the lumber jack show in Alaska)?

Did anyone mention that he refs kids soccer games?

If the JREF had saints. St.Hutch would be first on the list.

I must state that there is one other person in the Secret Cabal, but he is so shy and retiring, he may not want to identify himself, and I will leave it to him to do so.

Hint: He hates Rebecca.

Hates Rebecca?

that narrows it down to say...

This is so embarrassing.....

It began at TAM4, I helped a member on the QT to make it to TAM, on the basis that (1) They needed to be there and (2) That everybody would love having them there. That one has stayed private.

At TAM5 it was going to be slingblade, but she got stubborn on me and it ended up being a Forum activity (and a damn successful one at that)

Dr. A was easy, but since he is coming from England, the logistics are a bit harder and the cost a little higher. So GG and the rebecca-hater (peace and blessings upon them) jumped into help without even knowing the name of the person--and for that trust I am eternally (or at least my life-time) grateful.

Still have things to work out, like getting the airline ticket and Dr. A applying for a scholarship for the Registration fee, but we'll get it to work.

As for the praise, folks, I LIKE doing this. Most of the people I think the most highly of/care about on this grumpy planetary body we live on are at the other side of this message board. I've been fortunate the past 5-10 years and am in better financial shape than many, so if I can help someone who I would truly like to meet, well, it would be clam/mollusk (shellfish) of me, wouldn't it.

IF anybody want to help, PM me and I'll collect the funds and give you a full accounting at TAM6.

Alan Rickman can't afford his own ticket?

Seriously, DA is one of the few posters who "sounds" like his avatar. If he were AR, I wouldn't be a bit surprised.

There is a mechanism for making a donation specifically for helping people get to TAM isn't there? (as opposed to other donations to JREF and the forum). How does that work? How do you earmark a donation for the "scholarship fund"?

Contact Paul Agnastopoulus (I hope I spelled that correctly!)

He has taken on the task of being in charge of scholarships. If you ever met Paul (please come to TAM6 and meet hiim) you'll find out why everyone agrees he's perfect for this job (well nonpaying job that takes up much of his time!). He's fair, very private, and generous himself.

PM him and he can answer any questions you have.

He recently helped a few of us with another person that really deserves to come to TAM. He's another of our heros here on the forum.

oh I forgot I wanted to post a little here about our Geek Goddess!

I can't imagine her NOT being a part of the forum family, she's just so important to so many of us. She's got a heart as big as Texas.

If you want to contribute to the JREF scholarship fund, in general, that's Paul whats-his-name. If you want to contribute specifically to help Dr. A cover non-registration fee costs, contact Hutch.

If you want to help someone else get to TAM, outside the scholarship fund, start your own thread. :p

:D

Well, I'm waiting for instructions from Jeff on how to contribute. Kittynh had me PM Paul. Paul referred me to a thread by Jeff about the scholarship auction that implied Kittynh was the person to talk to. So, I'm a bit confused but I'm sure I'll get an official answer soon.

Dr. A's registration fee is now a nonissue.

You can use the PayPal email address specified in that thread to make contributions to the TAM6 scholarship fund.

If Dr. A actually sounds anything like Alan Rickman, I'd have to chain him up in a secret room and make him read the entire Monkey House book to me - twice over.

Slowly....

:D

I didn't know this thread was here 'til Geek Goddess told me just now ...

Let's see, I had a few things to say.

(1) Thank you.

(2) Thank you.

(3) I can't make out my own notes ... I think it reads: "Say T.Y." What could that stand for?

(4) Thank you.

To all Secret Cabalists everywhere, and to the good people at JREF for the scholarship, thank you all very much. I feel as happy as Herbert the Happy Clam. Also honored. Also ...

* does his best Sally Field impression *

I just hope you won't all be disappointed when you find that I don't actually bestride the earth like a colossus, that the ground doesn't quake beneath my feet, and that my words are not accompanied by dramatic meterological phenomena. I have occcasionally been described as "cute", and you may have to settle for that.

You're just trying to escape blame if there are earthquakes or severe weather while we're at TAM.

Sorry, won't work. You are now officially to blame for any/all disastrous natural phenomenon that occur during TAM 6.

Who can possibly hate Rebecca?, there must be an error somewhere .....

Anyway, that guy will surely win the heart of all JREF skepchicks with this action. Damn, I can't compete under these conditions... :o;)

BTW, good to know that Dr. A will be at TAM6.
