Benefit of Christianity?

Cute enough to inspire countless Christians to witness to others. If they die in the process, so what? They'll be in Heaven, where they'll eventually be anyway.

Even if you don't believe the "Ressurrection of the Saints," that's not important; they believe, and that is enough for them.

What baffles me is this:

"The police report notes from video surveillance of the parking lot that the man was in Jacobi's car for almost 12 minutes before he exited. The recording also shows several dozen shoppers walked by the car during the time Jacobi was ministering to the man."

Nobody walking by noticed a tall, raggedy man get in to the 92-year old woman's car, threaten her, take her money, and then leave.

This alone does more to re-affirm my faith in God than any Christophobic "evidence" ever did to convince me to put my faith in mere humanity.

I see this much more as a lesson in human kindness rather then a lesson in "God's grace". But I'll agree it's cute.... deluded but cute.

For 12 minutes people walked past, what, two people talking in a parked car? This is damning evidence against humanity?

In fairness, I feel I must concede that there is at least one benefit to christianity. It offers people a delusional "crutch" to help them cope in life. This is of course not ideal, but it seems that most people from time to time will indulge in some sort of self delusion to get through the day. Drugs, alcohol, or theism. Each is a manner of escape from reality in a sense ...

I don't see the link here either. In any case, imagine the legal complications involved if one decided to intervene in every "suspicious" situation. In some cases, the law demands that an individual retreat from a threat. Not necessarily damning evidence against humanity but perhaps, arguably, damning evidence against a horrifically convoluted legal system ...

You can't find better evidence than that that GOD is real.

:boggled:

Uhh ... Grayman? Have you been taking any homeopathics lately? Or has your tinfoil hat acquired a leak? ;) This no more "proves" the existance of God than do all of the stories in the Bible.

It does, however, prove that a certain 92-year old woman can back down a robber, even if she eventually did give him her money.

What I wonder is, how many of those passers by were Christians?

Even one passing by such a scene would be too many. To be fair though, how many were atheists, jews, moslems, or "other"?

And just where was the Flying Spaghetti Monster all this time?

Since this was the U.S., the odds are pretty good none of them were atheists.

His noodly goodness does not claim to fix our problems in this life. But he would have supplied her with access to the beer volcano and stripper factory had she died. Though I suppose in this case that might not have been seen as such a great reward.

Tanstaafl, I have somewhat a different perception of paradise. What would be the great FSM's stance with respect to eternity and, lets say, Annette Funicello???

That sounded like paradise to me too, about 40 years ago.

Since FSM posts here, you could pose that question yourself.

Well, Fnord: Grayman is right, the evidence for god doesn't get any better than this. Which says a lot about the sad state of 'evidence' for God.

Fnord, I really don't understand the point you are trying to make here. That people didn't pay attention, god must be real?
or
That god saved her, but humanity just ignored her?

Either of these statements would be rather weak arguments, and I'd be suprised to see you make them.

The headline should have been "Woman who gave money to mugger not stabbed".
I'm happy for her, but it's hardly surprising.

Never posit more than the stated evidence will allow.

People have told me to deny the existance of God and put my faith in humanity. When "dozens of people" fail to notice -- or refuse to act if they did notice -- that a tall, raggedy man got in to a 92-year old woman's car, threatened her, took her money, and then left, it only serves to re-affirm my faith in humanity as a largely, self-serving, indifferent, cowardly, and greedy lot.

That the woman is still alive and unharmed after she expressed her faith in God, in both word and act, to a man who threatened her if she did not give him her money, only re-affirms that my own faith in God has a purpose.

Note that no mere mortal can prove the existance or non-existance of God.

How would the people passing by know that the "tall, raggedy man" was not her son, grandson, friend, etc.? I myself am tall and have on occasion worn torn jeans (which might qualify me as "raggedy") to visit my grandmother. I see younger people sitting in cars with older people on a regular basis and never feel inclined to go beat on their windows in case it's just a cleverly disguised mugging.

And the fact that she expressed her faith in God to the mugger means very little considering other than that the mugger may have shared her same beliefs at least to a small degree.

All good points.

"Never posit more than the stated evidence will allow." I've blundered my own rule, eh?

So why get involved? It's just a well-dressed old woman sitting in a car talking to a shabbily-dressed man. Nothing to see here. Move along. Let's get that Christmas shopping done!

The mugger may or may not have shared her beliefs. What he believed is a matter for speculation. Never posit ... et cetera.
