TAM 5: It's the Riviera, Baby!

Since the Stardust will be well on its way to implosion by the next year's TAM, we've had to find new digs.

So for 2007, The Amaz!ng Meeting will be held at:

The Riviera!

Fans of the original Austin Powers movie will recognize this locale.

It's in the same general area as the Stardust, so many of the usual haunts will still be in walking distance.

The dates are January 18th - 21st 2007, which is a week earlier than last years.

Yay! I was disapointed because certain events prevented me from attending this year and I was worried that if they moved it to Florida I wouldn't be able to afford it next year. But now that I know it'll be in Vegas again I can say, THIS YEAR FOR SURE!

Ah, but you don't have to look at it when you're inside; that's the beauty of the scheme. I'm pretty certain that's the only reason people stay at the Imperial Palace, for that matter.

I was married at the Riviera on 05-05-05, so it's a lovely time to revisit! And this time, I'm bringing Mister Sistathinker!

The dates are the problem. They fall within the end-of-year school vacation period for Australia, and thus all the airfares from here are PEAK PRICING! That is, at least double the usual fare. It was one of the reasons why 2006 was possible for us - the dates fell just outside that envelope, and were thus "shoulder" pricing (i.e. 15% premium on regular fare only).

Otherwise, I was really going to try and make it again... I need to win lottery...

Personally, I think they would be better off not having it in January at all. March or April, perhaps, but January is due to its proximity to Christmas. A lot of people are spending January recovering from financially overextending themselves in December. Others have already used up a lot of vaction time (not to mention patience with the travel industry) travelling for the holidays. As successful as TAMs have been in January, I think they would be MORE successful in just about any of the other 11 months of the year.

The hotel rates (for the conference, rooms, etc.) are much cheaper in January in Las Vegas. I think that's part of the motivation for having the conference at this time.
