The US is carrying out an operation to seize the Venezuela-linked oil tanker Marinera, formerly known as Bella-1, a US official confirms to CBS News, the BBC's US partner.

Isn't Russia under strict oil sanctions? Aren't we supposed to be seizing those? I thought the issue was the reason for it - not for any sanction, but because the orange pedophile didn't get to wet his beak first.

I wasn't born in time to witness the Cuban missile crisis*. This is fascinating.

*But I did later hear the reminiscences of a duty manager in BBC Broadcasting House, recalling the reports coming in at the peak of the crisis. We were sitting in the canteen on a nightshift, looking out over a sleeping London, and he described being in exactly the same spot in 1962, overwhelmed by the thought that none of those millions of people below would ever wake up.

Well, I'm not sure. Is Russia under sanctions? Yeah, sure. But whose sanctions? UN? US? Imposed under what authority? I genuinely don't know.

If they're US sanctions imposed purely because the US says so then it's just a circular argument to say the sanctions justify the US seizure.

You're suspiciously quick to submit that invoice for services rendered. Is Venezuela suddenly free now? Was Maduro some kind of evil wizard whose enchantment is now forever broken, or is it possibly a little more complicated than that?
