The U.S., a wretched hive of scum and villainy.
I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up yet.

Blaze in Swiss resort bar kills around 40 people, police say

LONDON -- Around 40 people were killed and 115 others were injured early on New Year's Day, when a fire ripped through a popular bar in a resort town in the Swiss Alps, police said.

The Swiss president said the fire is "one of the worst tragedies our country has experienced."

A blaze of "undetermined origin" broke out at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana at about 1:30 a.m. local time, the Cantonal Police of Valais said in a statement.

Investigators were working on Thursday to determine the cause of the fire, officials said during a press conference.

A criminal investigation into the fire has been launched by the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Canton of Valais, but officials said the possibility of a terrorist attack has been ruled out.

Some sources have claimed that it was started by a candle, but this has not yet been confirmed.

Something similar happened a few decades back in the Netherlands, the combination of too many people in a small space, alcohol, fireworks and lots of flammable decorations can unfortunately go very wrong very fast.

I pity those that went trough this.

Early days, so not much to comment on at this point. Except of course for those for whom "thoughts and prayers" are a standard response.
But, if you do want comment, this site provides!

Over in another thread, someone is making fun of this and also believes that this is an example of the typical mindset of the liberal/progressives.

Not one comment from them about how horrible this is, but they're right there trying to own the libs by making fun of this horrible, horrible fire and loss of lives.

I was in a rooming house fire on Christmas Eve that killed two people, and this is NOT a laughing matter.

I also offer thoughts and prayers to the victims and their loved ones, and I don't care what anyone thinks.

I read it was sparklers, but the exact cause has not been established. Only that it was not arson or terrorism.

If there's something else you think I can do from here in Australia, with no money and no income, I'd like to hear it.

I'm an atheist. I don't pray. My thoughts are of no help whatsoever.

She doesn't care what you believe but doing nothing at all or only showing a little empathy is still better than using this horrible event as a chance to own or make fun of the libs.

The difference is when my fellow stupid republicans (in this country) only offer thoughts and prayers and nothing else after a mass shooting is sad and unconscionable, but that's just my opinion, and you know the rest.

The cruelty is the point.

And that's why I don't do it. Better to stay silent.

I was just thinking about this, but what do you do when someone you know has lost a loved one?

I know you wouldn't say, "Thoughts and prayers," but do you at least say, "I'm sorry for your loss," or, "My condolences," or do you just say nothing?

To me, that's really no different than saying, "thoughts and prayers," but that's just my opinion, and in no way a judgement of you personally.

I'm just wondering what your thoughts (or anyone else reading this) are on this.

Personally, when someone says to me, "I'm sorry for your loss," I sometimes ask them, "Why are you sorry? You didn't have anything to do with their death, or did you?"

Yeah, I know, I can be a stupid idiot sometimes.
