I don't think it is. Look at very young children. Kindergarteners don't care if the other kid doesn't look like them.

I dunno man. I got to experience multi-racial, urban, US public schools (including forced busing, hurrah!). Black kids went with black kids. White kids went with white kids. Hispanic kids went with Hispanic kids. That was just the way it was. I think one handicap White progressives have in their worldview is that they were mostly raised in homogenous White communities - they just don't know how the world really is.

I'm not convinced it's a genuine preference for people that look like you as much as it is a preference for people you are comfortably familiar with.

Look at the way babies get kind of freaked out by the unfamiliar; You might get a baby that seems frightened the first time they see the face of someone who is a different race and think, ah, racial preference is endemic to humans!! But if they've never seen a big mustache then the first time they see a big mustache they'll get scared and worried for a minute until everything is ok. And yet a mustache is not a racial characteristic.

I think people seek out familiarity, and that very often they are most familiar with people very local to them, which are in turn often the same race as them. It amounts to the same thing by circumstance rather than an actual hardwired racial preference.

As a kid the familiarity I sought out was weird little nerds, I'm afraid, and I think the only overrepresented demographic in there was 'going to turn out to be gay later'

It's probably something like that, but there's nothing wrong with it. It's a completely normal human behavior. My sense is that it seems wrong to White liberals because they usually, an uniquely, have an out-group preference. All others have an in-group preference.

I remember this because one of my friends, who lived on Martha's Vineyard at that time, gave me a first-hand account of the islanders rising to the occasion by providing emergency housing, food, and other support for those migrants.

DeSantis also bused migrants to southern states such as Georgia and Tennessee, where they were greeted with considerably less warmth than on Martha's Vineyard.
