Lee Statue goes down in Charolttesvile

I live in the south; most white people here should absolutely be constantly reminded that their side did not win, and that the country as a whole abhors their traitor ancestors

I've got no problem with that. But, if they had won, as I say...most would likely be singing a different tune.

If southern pols today are uneasy about mobs, they have their reasons; I think I may say they've learned from their past. There's been far too much mobbery in US history, and not just Down Souf.

To a certain point, I agree with Warp12. Tearing down these statues illegally and then trying to get away with it is not the American way. Tearing them down and then standing and taking the legal consequences is just exactly American. If southerners are ready to do that, then I say welcome back, Johnny.

Hauling away Marse Robbut in Bronze peacefully and according to law accomplishes a good purpose, but it's not nearly as much fun.

I would repurpose memorials to confederates to have them hanging from the neck.
It’s what should have happened to every one of those treasonous bastards as soon as the war ended.

There's no doubt that the "reconstruction" was way too short, and way too kind on the perpetrators of that rebellion.

Yeah a jaunty tune while they still slaved in the cotton fields.

The South losing was a good thing, you understand that right?

That doesn't make sense -- again.
The North didn't start the war and didn't rebel against their government. There's no cause for the reverse.

Apparently he thinks most people only think slavery was bad because it's a popular position at the moment, rather than a thought out position which was already the stance of most of the civilized world prior to 1861.

It is the core of a post-fact world. Everything is just an opinion, a popularity contest, a point of view.

Actual concrete, hard facts don't exist.

Some people think slavery was good, some people thought slavery was bad. They fought a war over it. Slavery is only bad because one side one IS LITERALLY WHAT THEY THINK.

I'm not defending the South, in any way. I am glad slavery was abolished.

I'm just stating that the perception would be entirely different if they won. Probably most of the white people whining here would be owning a few slaves of their own, right now.

We just got through renaming a bunch of our high schools.

Again in the 1930s-1940s a lot of people thought it was super-clever to name schools in predominantly black areas after Confederate leaders, which is was not at all an intimidation or dehumanizing tactic and it would be hyperbolic to suggest it was.

No they would not. Slaves by now would be free although living in a separate separation similar to what used to be in South Africa. Southern farmers would have been out competed by modern farming methods which would have been cheaper than slave labor.

I'm from Georgia and as southern as you can get but I'm so glad the south lost the war that its hard for me to put into words properly.

Lol. Lot of heavy lifting in that "if." The highlighted is stupid; do you actually believe slavery would have survived in the U.S. until 2021, and that the "white people whining here" would be so morally bereft that they would own slaves, or are you being hyperbolic?

I hope it's the latter.

It’s amusing how folks complain about “mobs” when several of these monuments celebrate mob rule in the abuse of blacks.

I'm pretty sure that a lot of people have argued against slavery for millennia. It's not some modern fad.

Which was never going to happen. The American Civil War was a case of when not if the South lost and how much of a beating it took before it gave in.

I tend to disagree. I think the South had a genuine change of winning...not a military victory, but the same kind of victory that the American Rebels won in the War Of Indepdence, and the North Vietnamese won In Vietnam:If they lasted long enough and caused enough Northern casualties the majority of the North would just decide it was not worth the cost and give up. They came close at least once:In the Summer of 1864 when the two major battlefronts...Petersburg and Atlanta..turned to stalemate.after campaigns with horrendous casualties.(1864 was the bloodiest year of the war) Lincoln was in deep trouble in his reelection bid. He was running behind any Democratic challenger, and the Peace Democrats/Copperheads had taken over the party. If th Dems had won, there would have been a negotiated peace with the South winning it;s indepdence. Luckily Sherman taking Atlanta in August, and a series of other victories turned the tide of the elections.THe South was doomed after that.

Morals? Totally dynamic, my man. History has clearly proven that.

He thinks being against Slavery is just another from of being "woke".
