Trump announces intent to end Birthright Citizenship

Trump has some support.

Lindsey Graham Tweets

"Finally, a president willing to take on this absurd policy of birthright citizenship."

"I’ve always supported comprehensive immigration reform – and at the same time – the elimination of birthright citizenship."

"The United States is one of two developed countries in the world who grant citizenship based on location of birth."

"This policy is a magnet for illegal immigration, out of the mainstream of the developed world, and needs to come to an end."

"In addition, I plan to introduce legislation along the same lines as the proposed executive order from President @realDonaldTrump."

Graham's transition from being a never-Trumper three years ago to his current ass-licking is pretty sad.

This is a risky strategy for Trump, IMO. It's an issue that might move the needle on the youth vote - might - though I really can't say anymore. Not that I ever was so great at predicting the future.

I wonder how he resolves his current support of Trump with his deep love for John McCain.

I was looking something up and found this tweet from Giuliani:
Senator Lindsay Graham distinguished himself today as the fairest man and the best lawyer in Washington. He voted for Justices Sotormayor and Kagen on old fashioned principles. I also did.

What the hell is Giuliani talking about? He's never been a senator. I notice he also misspelled "Sotomayor" but whatever. I am mostly puzzled by his "I also did." I can't think of any scenario where that makes sense. (I also realize it's off topic - not trying to derail; just baffled).

I think he is shooting for attorney general

Not a chance!

Trump said of Lindsey: “I think Lindsey Graham is a disgrace, and I think you have one of the worst representatives of any representative in the United States, and I don’t think he should run,...”
“I don’t think he could run for dog catcher in this state and win again. I really don’t.

You're expecting Trump to be consistent. Silly boy.

In thinking about this, if Trump does actually try to pull this off, we can expect a whole new type of "Sovereign Citizen" to emerge.

Trump won't do anything. It's served his purpose by him making the claim, it's now a "fact" for his core supporters. And if it doesn't happen it's not his fault it will be those terrible Democrats and RINOs who blocked it because they want to flood the country with undesirables.

I hope I don't get suspended for saying this because it is too controversial for establishment journalists, but I have a niece who was born in America and she holds an American passport because of that. This new Trump policy seems to have been devised on the back of an envelope and seems ill-thought out to me. It's a bit like it seems like half of the British population are rushing to obtain an Irish passport at the moment because of Brexit. The TV presenter Jonathan Ross seems now to have obtained a German passport for himself and children for Brexit purposes because his parents came from Germany to the UK before the second world war.

How about that well-known conservative whack-job, Harry Reid?

Frankly, it's not that Trump opposes the policy that bothers me. No, it's is his idea that he can change the Constitution on his xenophobic whim. If Trump wants to change it why doesn't he have the bill written and introduced in Congress?

See by US rules he would be a citizen but his children would not be.

Strictly speaking it is that he can disregard the constitution on a whim. This is backed up by precedent, see Andrew Jackson and his response to the Supreme court "let them enforce it".

The law only applies against the executive if the courts and legislative branches hold them to it. How Bush made torture legal was just such a case for more current events.

I'm not sure this is a wannabe dictator attempt to actually change the Constitution by executive order... (though it'd be a nice side effect for him if it turns out it works).

Seems to me that he's just throwing out something outrageous, trying to bait Democrats into speaking out against his plan so he can go 'See, they want to flood the country with illegals' in order to get some extra votes in the upcoming midterms.

Absolutely true. Nevertheless, I think it comes down to the opposite though. 'Let Trump enforce it.' How would he even go about trying to enforce it? Especially after the courts say no.

But this isn't serious. He's ******* with us. He's doing it for the reaction. Trump is throwing red meat to his base for the election and he's trolling everyone else. He might even issue the EO knowing that it will continue the storm for a while. Trump is that pre-teen boy that causes mischief just to see what happens.

He has been fine with ignoring the court orders about reuniting families, why would this phase him or others? We have firmly set that following illegal orders is not illegal in this country, so it isn't like those carrying them out would need to be worried about facing legal sanction. The courts can say what they want, they can't force the executive to listen.

Well also true. But would republicans impeach him over this?

The scariest thing is that he announces a blatantly illegal plan and it helps him build support. His base likes the idea of a dictator tearing up the constitution and rule of law, that energizes them.

I think you miss the point. All these people that are required to enforce the law can't because that would be breaking the law and sometimes their oaths.

So what? Torturing detainees did that and that seems to have stopped exactly 0 people from doing it. So why should this be different? I get it no one ever really took the Uniform Code of Military Justice as a serious legal document but still.

You think anyone is going to charge the people only following orders for merely violating the constitution? That seems to be totally antithetical to american values at this point.

Or take a more recent example, with the first muslim ban you had plenty of people in customs and border enforcement blocking legal residents from entering the country. What consequence did this illegal act cost them?
