Responsible gun owner shoots book. And boyfriend.

Simply dieing from something with an acceptable risk of death is not evidence it is unacceptable.

I said stupid. Don't try and inch the definition away.

Stupid, as in an action not likely to be taken by someone who has either basic knowledge or equivalent experience in the field.

But if you are bringing acceptable into it, no stupid people with guns is not acceptable. As you can see they tend to kill people.

Of all possible handguns they went with a Desert Eagle? Uh... yeah, a thick book could stop a small-caliber gun, but hardly a .50...
The 50 AE cartridge is rather powerful. I don't want to get hit with it no matter what kind of protection I'm wearing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.50_Action_Express

I have a video on youtube showing how well my suppressed 22lr pistol will penetrate a 1-1/2 inch phone book; every round blows right through. It seems as it was going to be just a mater of time until this guy would have died doing something else even if he survived this stunt.

Acceptable to him and his (wife/girl friend/significant other). Not to almost anyone else. To just about anyone else it was a stupid risk.

That is sort of the point. Engaging in behavior everyone finds acceptable is not thrilling. That is why it is designed to garner attention.

I know you know this, but for others it is probably worth pointing out that the larger bullet does not always penetrate better. A soft larger bullet that expands will be stopped faster than a jacketed round, even one of far less energy at impact.

I haven't read up on this incident a lot yet, but if it was the .50 AE JSP, that can sometimes penetrate IIIA body armor, and FMJ goes through reliably. In other words, the roughly 1200 footpounds of energy still has pretty good penetration even when hitting half inch surface impacts. For reference though, rounds like the 5.7x28 will go through up to level IV body armor, even though it's much closer to that .22 in size than the .50AE.

This is one of those stunts that sounds stupid at first glance, but when you know a little more about it, it becomes transcendentally stupid.

You are correct of course. I wanted to let people know that even a soft lead round nose 22 caliber bullet moving at about 1050 feet per second has excellent penetration through a book. Even though the 50AE bullet the fool was killed with was over twice as wide as a 22lr and had a soft noise which most likely deformed/expanded upon impact, the power at the muzzle was likely 15 times as much.
