Could Obama have beaten Trump?

Lets say that on planet X Hillary Clinton won the 2008 dem primaries instead of Obama. She then goes on to easily beat McCain that year and Romney in 2012. Obama most likely serves in her administration(SOS or some other position) and in 2016 is the Democratic nominee against Trump. Would Obama have won this election if things were that way?

Way too many variables. What did Clinton accomplish in eight years? What scandals were associated with her (and her hubby)? What's the state of the economy? What's the state of our foreign affairs? Why assume Obama would leave the Senate to work for Clinton? Trump seemed largely to be motivated by personal hostility toward President Obama. Would Trump even have run if Obama hadn't been President? Etc., etc., etc.

Why bother asking? Perchance is this yet another blame Clinton thread?

Assuming that everything else went the same way, no chance.

Clinton was at least white. With Obama being a Kenyan Muslim he would be barred from running, and even overcoming that hurdle wouldn't be enough to counter the racism and lies coming from the right. Throw in a few fake scandals like Benghazi etc. (which the Republicans would have had 8 years to germinate) and he is toast.

OTOH if it wasn't for Obama being president Trump wouldn't have run anyway. So your scenario is doubly unrealistic.

In the ring? TKO

Edit: Should have read the whole OP instead of just the title at first

I take issue with the highlighted premise. She might have won, but I doubt it would have been easy.

I suspect that Clinton was the only Democrat candidate that Trump had a chance of beating. With Sanders as the candidate we would not had as many (maybe?) men who might normally vote Democrat abandon Clinton to vote (or not vote at all) for Trump.

Unfortunately now we are left with 4 years of bizarre leadership in the White House. I doubt that Trump will be impeached or win another election unless the economy really takes a turn for the better and race relations improve despite the encouragement racists are getting from having someone so uncaring in office.

Would Clinton's voters have shown up for Obama at the end of her term, though?

Would Obama's voters have had the same numbers now as they did 8 years ago?

Too many variables.

Maybe not the same, but given it was Trump, and the leaked tapes, and all the crazy **** he said, I think GOP turnout would have been abysmal. It took someone like Hillary to really get the GOP vote out.
