Merged 39th year of Roman Polanski evading rape charges / Roman Polanski looks to clear name

Not a big deal. I heard an interview with the alleged victim: she's cool with it.

So what? The Anglo-American system is premised on crimes being against society, not just the direct victim(s).

If you want a justice system that is purely victim driven - abused spouses can be beaten in public with no consequences so long as they don't officially complain, children can be abused with no consequences as long as they stay silent, etc. - then maybe that matters. But at the time, she was 13 and drugged, doubly incapable of consenting.

In Europe it's OK to drug and rape a child if you're a famous director.

The limitation law in these cases shows how stupid it is when you look at Bill Cosby

My understanding is that she would rather forget it, and go on, this has been what, 40 years, and not being "paid off". She was 13 and now 52 and she is probably more annoyed than anything at the attention.

Rape a girl, and if you wait long enough, dodge justice long enough, maybe she'll move on, maybe society will move on, and it will be like you never raped anyone. Except for that girl.

Yup. Its actually something she's rather put behind her, and continually bringing up the issue is causing her more hardship.

But, he did rape someone.

And?

He raped a 13 year old.

It is "his" crime

Yeah and now, 39 years later, everything will become alright and all wounds will heal but only if he's imprisoned so it's imperative that this charade continues unabated.

One have to wonder whether or not the they can have his corpse extradited (or his ashes in case he gets cremated) to have them serve out his sentence. At this point it would make as much sense as having him do it in person, although i guess his bones or ashes won't be able to feel suffering as that is the main raison d'etre of the American justice system: to cause suffering for the sake of suffering.

I am not saying he did not, I am betting that he frankly would not care less by now, but she does and while there is no harm or hindering put upon him, it does on her. He will end his life as is and no amount of mucking up will faze him that much is sure by now.

So you can show up your indignation to somebody who don't care and is simply probably now going toward an end of life and would not care less what half the world think of him, because half the world *already* know. Or (more directed at the media which on regular basis bother her) you could salt the wound of that woman over and over.

Remind us on this forum is as stupid as those "konie 2010" twitter stuff.

Whether or not the victim of the original crime forgives him or not is irrelevant: Polanski evaded justice by fleeing. The state cannot allow people to flout its authority. Whether he stands trial for the rape or gets the charges dropped or gets found not guilty it gets a slap on the wrist doesn't matter, what matters is that he undergo the same process as everybody else. Nobody is above the law, nobody should be allowed to defy it.

Did I mention the state ? The state for all i know will continue to wait that Polanski land in a country where they can grip him, whether we "remind" us all with such thread or not. But we are neither the state, nor are the journalist which keep harping on the woman on regular basis , and I am betting next year (40 years) it will be a **** fest (ETA: now that I think of it if I was this woman and her family I would organize already a travel far away from any media for a month or two). I am just questioning the utility of normal non involved people and journalist to bring that up.

Big difference.

ETA: I am betting it is no more than a feel-good-moral-outrage and nothing else.

Polanski was convicted and skipped the country before he went to prison. There is no statute of limitations on that.

I disagree a bit on that, though you're right in principle. But the reality looks different.

He evaded an unreliable justice system. He fled because he was NOT treated like everybody else. With very big differences in treatment depending on money, social status and skin color.

Of course such differences exist in other countries as well ... but they're mostly not that crass outside of dictatorships.

True, anybody else would have served their prison sentence long ago.

Holy ****, no he did not! All those things you list tend to give better treatment to people like him. What the actual hell?

America derangement syndrome is strong in some, and even people who drug and rape thirteen year olds then evade sentencing are an opportunity to dump all over it.

This, many times over.

Good luck with that.

Let's not forget that the main reason that Switzerland denied extradition was that the US authorities could not make credible that Polanski would have gotten more than 6 month imprisonment, which was the lower bound set in the Swiss-US extradition treaty.

Let's also not forget with all the Europe-bashing in this thread, that Polanski underwent a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation which recommended just probation; and so did his probation officer. Times were very different, and so were attitudes in the US towards statutory rape.

If the US wants him extradited, they'll have to look for a country that is willing to extradite someone for anything up to an unpaid speeding ticket.

I'm sure you didn't intend to equate rape with a speeding ticket but it came off that way a little.
