This is just a heads up for everyone who has upgraded to 64bit hardware. Like many other people, I was wary of the bugs and instability I might have to deal with running XP64 with most 32bit apps. Turns out just the opposite, application and response lag in some areas with 32bit apps was cut in half, and software that is 64bit compliant is very refreshing. Feels like a good portion of what made XP bloatware has been resolved. XSI 5 can already support 4.7 billion polygon scenes on quad x86 based workstations. Microsoft also apparently added a few fixes and touches here and there to make it stand out from the 32bit version. Definitely upgrade if you can afford it, especially if you use XP for graphically intensive work - you probably won't be sorry.

Interestingly, Windows NT 3.x and 4.0 was running native on 64 bit hardware back in the 90's. And there was a whole slew of conversion products readily available, including one that upgraded your 32-bit apps to 64-bit on the fly! Support for 64-bit processors was dropped for Win2K.

So it looks like MS have simply dusted off the old software from 10 years ago! What goes around comes around??

I won't tell them if you won't tell them! ;)

ETA: Actually, I have used the Itanium II for Windows 2003 Server and OpenVMS. Compared to the Alpha, the Itanium has a really clunky interface, but otherwise it runs quite well. Better than the Itanium I (aka "The Itanic"). Although my heart goes to the Alpha, the Itanium makes sound financial sense as its successor today.
