For those who either don't follow XKCD or don't look at the stuff around the cartoon, Randall Monroe has put together a characteristically thought-provoking and informative chart of radiation dosages spanning nine orders of magnitude, typical examples, and their effect on the body. In the context of recent events at the Fukushima nuclear plant, it's well worth a look.

Once again reaffirming that Mr. Monroe is really really smart. This is a great illustration though, one thing I love about him is how well he can convey things like this in such a simple format.

I love the 'eating a banana' data point.

That is really useful and laid out in an easily understandable way, thanks for sharing it.

As a graduate of X-ray school, I find it odd that they have a hand X-ray as using more radiation than an "arm" X-ray (and wonder whether that means humerus, forearm, or elbow, since we don't do the whole arm at once), but the rest seems right. (I wonder if the arm number is for one picture and the hand one is for a complete series, which is usually three pictures.)

OH MY GAWD! Which is more dangerous, the green radiation, the brown or the blue stuff?

Is Japanese radiation BROWN?

Oh please, no, because I'm too young to die and I'm on the west coast of Britain, or is it the east- and one of those is close to Japan.
Japan's in Europe, right?

- Just in case 0.000001% of anybody thinks I'm serious.
