Wrong Characters in Firefox

Occasionally for some unknown reason, Firefox will not display certain characters properly. For example, when I type the at symbol, this shows up

If I type an apostrophe mark (the one beside the enter key) I get nothing unless I type it twice, after which I get this
``
Instead of a number symbol, I get this
/
if I type a quote or slash, I get this
É and é
Lesser than and greater than gives me this
' and .

The other slash gives me this:
< and with shift pushed: >

Tilde gives me this :
# or with shift pushed: |

It`s like the mapping of the keyboard is all screwed up or something.
Anyone have any ideas hereÉ (that should be a question mark, but you know...)

What happens if you type the apostrophe followed by an e? Do you get an è? The reason I ask is that keyboards can be set up for foreign languages, and typing some of their letters is facilitated by that sequence. Check the Tools->Options->Advanced->Edit Languages seting in Firefox to make sure it's the one you want.

In windows 2000 I have two input language installed
(Control panel -> Keyboard -> Input Locales).

I have English (US) and French(Canada).

I switch keyboard with Left Alt+Shift

With US locale selected I get ? with French locale Selected I get É with the same key (The one left of the right shift key).

If you have more than one language installed maybe you have change language by accident.

I do not know if this helps you in any way.

Ok, I found the language settings and changed everything to English-US. Time will tell if this does the trick, but in the meantime, I have confidence that this is the correct solution to the problem.
