I recommend this fellow's books on design and technology. To Engineer is Human, and The Pencil. He has a new one coming out next year from Knopf, called Small Things Considered: Why There is No Perfect Design.
There's a piece in the current American Scholar called The Evolution of the Grocery Bag that's worth reading.
