So my Start button on Windows 10 no longer works, right-clicking pinned applications doesn't work, and Cortana is unavailable. Not that I've ever spoken with her.

Gotta CTL+ALT+DELETE to shut it down.

Could be because Cortana is a famous sword not a servant. (Holger/Ogier le Dansk - bears it)

Works on my wife's login, so no, it's definitely an OS thing. I'm hoping Microsoft will release an update to fix it. For now I can get by because I'm PC savvy. Her, not so much.

If it works on one login but not another with the same computer, could it be a setting accidentally made? What would happen if you simply create another user and a fresh login?

I have the same problem with the Start button. If the computer hasn't been on for long it will usually work. But if it's been on a long time it rarely works. I can right click on it and get the pop-up box to appear. But left-click won't work.

It's apparently a common problem. There are sites that tell how to fix it, but why should we have to? Couldn't this be solved in an update?

Any guesses why I have not got Windows 10???????????????

If you're waiting for an update to fix this problem, you will die first. This has been a problem for months and millions of computers all over the world have experienced this problem. I've had the problem 3 times now and this is the easy way to fix it...

Simply do another upgrade to Windows 10. This method won't delete any of your programs and it won't disturb any of your documents. Any other method other than the very simple ones that you'll find when searching how to fix the problem, may or may not work.

The only down side is that you'll have to reconfigure all your settings again. If the very simple solutions don't work this is a no brainer. It take all of about 15-20 minutes or so and you'll be good to go after you redo all of the settings again, which doesn't take a lot of time...

I've taken in upwards of about 40 computers or so with that exact issue. Just restart it 5-6 times until windows kickstarts the final installation of the updates that have already been downloaded. It's worked every time so far. It seems like it's a problem with partially-installed updates.

How do I do a upgrade to Windows 10? I have this problem. Looked for solutions on the Internet and the only one that worked so far is to create another account.

You must be joking... http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wind...GOO_MSBranded_INT_en-US_upgrade to windows 10

If you fixed it by creating another account, you don't need to do anything more. Many times the system won't allow you to create another account, so the upgrade is the only way to fix it without having to reload everything based on my experience with my machine...

I don't have any partial updates, and I'm all caught up.

Why not just recover/reset windows 10?

That should be the same as updating again?

No, I don't think so. The reset will delete all of your third party programs requiring them to be re-installed again. A recovery will merely go back to when it was working properly to likely occur again on the next update.

The upgrade to fix the problem doesn't delete anything at all. If you upgraded from say win 7 or 8, it's mostly the same. However, when I upgraded originally Norton 365 was deleted and had to be installed again. When I did it to correct the Start Menu/Cortana problem Norton was there when I finished. I had by then changed to Norton Security with backup, but I don't know if that was the difference.

During all of my failures I could not create another user as some have suggested. I also rebooted numerous times and that did not fix it. I tried all of the suggested fixes found on a google search and nothing worked. I then upgraded again and that fixed it hopefully for good this time...

I suspect there is a difference in fixes depending on how Win 10 was originally installed. Was it an original clean install or was it an upgrade. I upgraded from Win 8.1. I have been unable to find any information on the percentages of occurrences between a clean install versus an upgrade. I'd welcome that info if anyone has it.

As I said earlier, millions of computers have or have had this problem and to my knowledge MS has done nothing to correct it. At least if they've tried it has not been effective to my knowledge...

Try this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3092053

I had the problem described at the above link where one of my apps just refused to work. While researching the issue, I found people saying that this bug also affected the search function and the Start menu. I had to run the fix a couple of times to get it to work, but once it was done I haven't had any more problems.

For those who don't want to click on the link: There was a bug in early versions of Windows 10 that caused problems for users with multiple accounts when either Windows 10 or individual programs updated. MS rolled out a fix, but for some reason didn't include it in cumulative updates. So, if your computer wasn't updated when the fix was rolled out -- say if it was a new machine that was sitting on a store shelf at the time of the fix -- then you may still have the bug. Why MS doesn't publicize this or include the fix in regular updates is beyond me.

I have two Win10 boxes here, both clean installs, both up to date, both relatively virginal (I only use them for compatibility testing).

One of them works flawlessly.

The other gets into a weird mode, with no discernible cause, where it won't recognize arrow keys or left-clicks. Rebooting fixes it for a day or so. I've swapped out keyboard and mouse to no effect. The bizarre thing is that all other keys work, and right-click works. Only arrow keys and left-click die. Using a standard mouse (no special drivers) and no key macro programs installed.

I also have the Windows 10 start menu problem on two of my machines. In my case, the tile layer database is getting corrupted and needs to be replaced.

Here are the directions I follow to fix it...(step 3 is not needed).

I have not found the source of the problem so I end up doing this about once a month on each machine.
