Win XP File System

I use Win XP Pro here at the office, and it just seems to take a looong time to delete files, and quite some time to get Windows explorer up to browse the filesystem. I've got a 2.something GHz processor and lots of memory, this shouldn't be taking as long as it does.

Thoughts? Do I have some stoopid MS disc caching mechanism turned on that I shouldn't? Or is it just Win XP?

In disk properties, there is are options to Compress and encrypt, both of these will slow you down.

Another program might be checking stuff also, like Go-back or any kind of recovery software you have.

Try shutting down as many processes as you can through the Task Manager (CTL-ALT-DEL) and see if that makes a diff.

I just saw something about this problem at Lockergnome; I'll see if I can find it again. In the meantime try turning off Indexing Service. Control Panel-> Administrative Tools-> Services. Scroll down to and highlight Indexing Service, Right click-> Properties-> General Tab. Set Startup type to disabled and under Service status click Stop.

Interestingly, I already have both disc compression and the Indexing service disabled. However I do have the option checked to allow the indexing service to index my C: drive. I wonder if unchecking that will do something, even though I'm clearly not supposed to be running indexing.

By any chance do you have Norton Systemworks Protected Recycle Bin running?

Mapped drives can slow things down a lot if they have gone missing. I have found that lockups are often caused by network hangups.
