What Cablegate Tells us About Cyber Conservatism

The most vocal and strident reaction against Wikileaks has come from folks we can identify as neocons. Aside from demanding that the U.S. hunt down Julian Assange, Charles Krauthammer wrote, “Putting U.S. secrets on the Internet, a medium of universal dissemination new in human history, requires a reconceptualization of sabotage and espionage — and the laws to punish and prevent them.” Meanwhile Marc Thiessen, ignoring the distributed nature of WikiLeaks, called for the U.S. to “rally a coalition of the willing to defeat WikiLeaks by shutting down its servers and cutting off its finances.” And William Kristol, for his part, asked rhetorically, “Why can’t we disrupt and destroy WikiLeaks in both cyberspace and physical space, to the extent possible? Why can’t we warn others of repercussions from assisting this criminal enterprise hostile to the United States?”

I won’t say there’s a fully developed theory of internet policy in these statements, but you can definitely see a rejection of an unregulated internet, not to mention of internet exceptionalism. Information control in the name of security, they seem to argue, is more than justified. And despite his technical cluelessness, Marc Thiessen does grasp that pressuring internet intermediaries, like Amazon and PayPal, is an important way to control information. Joe Lieberman, often associated with neocon sensibilities, has led the charge to apply just such political pressure.

As I see it, these fascists aren't going to give up until they have complete control over the flow of information. They want this so they can keep us in the dark about what they're doing...

Sword of Truth,

It was an SNL quote, they were doing an impression of Julian Assange.

Well good luck to them. This is the internet, government can't win against the internet. The Streisand effect will defeat any efforts these neoconservatives use

If nothing else, all this wikileaks stuff demonstrates that the US really need to look into their own security.

Their initial reaction was it was great Saudi Arabia wanted the US to attack Iran.

"The hope here in the United States is that the investigation that we are conducting will allow us to hold accountable the people responsible for that unwarranted disclosure of information that has put at risk the safety of the American people" - Eric Holder

"Let's be clear. This disclosure is not just an attack on America — it's an attack on the international community" - Hillary Clinton

"Julian Assange is a high-tech terrorist" - Joe Biden

just who in the heck do these neo-conservatives think they are!!?

Hey, look!! People from the other party who are also wrong!! This proves...something.

America cannot succeed as a nation unless Obama can lie about bombing Yemen. Without the ability to keep that secret it's only a matter of time before foreign forces overrun our nation.

I don't understand how the USA government can prosecute a foreign national for treason.

Styles JL,

Not if the censorship methods are sufficiently widespread and detailed enough

Still waiting on that. Despite having arrested Assange Wikileaks is still publishing cables. They could have him shot now and it won't make an iota of difference to Wikileaks day to day functioning. The government is merely using him as a scapegoat for the fact that were incompetent enough to let a quarter of a million diplomatic cables get out into the public to begin with. Wikileaks goes far beyond just one person

Wikileaks has

-Website Mirrors hosted by a variety of people in all kinds of different places around the world, if even one stays up then people can still access any information
-A variety of different ways to circumnavigate any bans such as using the raw IP address, different domains hosted in different servers and countries
-Different websites that do similar things to Wikileaks (Openleaks, for instance)

If they can't even shut down websites hosting kiddie porn to the point of totally wiping them out, they sure as hell wouldn't be able to wipe out Wikileaks

Styles JL,

Eventually the ability to scan through, and automatically censor information worldwide will improve. Currently there are already plans to have the UN have control over the internet which would place one entity under the control of the whole world-wide-web.

Oh noes! Not the world wide web! Luckily we still have the internet and it's amazing ability to be nigh impossible to fully censor - not that the US or the UN have any real interest in doing so.

Neo-conservatives are simply neo-liberals who changed their name to gain power within the rightwing establishment that more aptly fits their much of their international policy leanings. And, yes, Hillary and Joe have always been counted among their friends and supporters.

*bolding mine*

This is SO naive. All of you who remain convinced that the Intenet will be a bastion of untouchable speech for all eternity. Truly naive. Rather shocking really.
