Why is Israel the only country not on the UN Security Council?

My jewish friend says the UN is being anti-semitic, which I doubt extremely much, so I'm wondering what are the real reasons.

Thanks!

Lots of countries are not on the UN Sec Counsl.

The UN is superpolitical. Its even set up to be unfair. Not all countries are treated as equal.

The 10 non permanent members are elected by the General Assembly. Israel has never been popular enough to get elected for some reason.

With the US as one of the permament members of the UNSC, Israel is well catered for. I suggest your friend take a look at the US use of veto concerning Israel over the last years.

I wouldn't go as far as to call UN anti-semitic, but Israel isn't going to be winning any popularity contests in UN any time soon.

Oh, ok.

I think what you were discussing is that Israel cannot be elected to the Security Council. The elected members come from regional groups, and geographically, Israel is from the Asian group.

Israel has never been able to join that group, however, because Israel's neighbors block it from entry.

It also cannot serve a term in many other UN bodies and committees.

Really? Are members elected by popularity? Interesting opinion.

So much for the international jewish conspiracy that dominates the USA Media but yet cannot dominate a corrupted organization like UN...

This thread is very telling.I will nominate it to be transfered to the Forum's Spotlight.
