Why do machines do this?

So one day I plug my Ipod into my computer and I get this window "You must format your Ipod to use it on windows. Do you want to do it now?" and I'm like... "Yeah right". I click "cancel" but that doesn't get me off the hook. I get the same window anytime I try to plug my Ipod. So I try another thing: I open Itunes first and then I plug my Ipod. I get this message that says that my Ipod is corrupted.

Does this make sense to anyone? Is there any solution for this or am I now forced to delete all of the information in my little toy?

Why do machines do this?
Why do they, from one day to the next, behave in an irrational way?

Depending on the sequence of when you disconnect your iPod, you may have corrupted it. I would just go ahead and do it. You should already have evrything in iTunes already. Just sync it overnight.

I'm sorry but I don't understand what you're telling me. What do you mean "just sync it overnight"?. And no. I can't just go ahead and delete all of the information cause a lot of it was from borrowed material and I don't have the original source anymore. You mean there's no other option?.

Just sync it overnight is refering to the time it might take to re-synchronize your iPod to your current library. For a 80gb, it might take an hour. I can't remember the last time I fully sync'ed mine, so your mileage may vary. Have you tried taking your iPod to a local Apple store? They might be able to give you help on how to pull the files off sucessfully. You could try using whatever disk tools your OS came with to un-corrupt your iPod.

Hmm. I wonder if that might be your problem, then? Using an iPod with iTunes, you're not supposed to have any material (music/videos/photos) in the iPod that is not in iTunes.

Unless you're talking about generic files stored in the iPod, if you're also using it as a USB drive.

The drives on iPods can be formatted for Windows or Macintosh. The main differences are in the file systems used (Macintosh format allows use of HFS+ file storage) and the fact that Macintosh format will allow the firmware to be updated automatically.

Is your computer a PC or a Mac? Macs will work with the iPod in either format, but PCs will only work with Windows formatted iPods.

It sounds like there is some problem with hard disk mode being enabled or disabled, and non-iTunes information being on the iPod.

Could you give us more detail about what happened?

Better yet, you might be able to find an answer by searching Apple's Support section.

Also, did this happen after the most recent automatic iTunes update (Windows version)? I hear friends had trouble with that one. One of them lost her library (not the music files, just iTunes' library files), and another one had to download iTunes from apple.com and reinstall to solve her problems.
I haven't plugged in my iPod since the last update, and I'm kinda afraid to...

You can delete the music files from your hard drive; as long as you don't delete the entry from iTunes, the file will not be deleted from your iPod.
