I read in Saturday's paper about this WAVE machine, that supposed to vibrate up and down and thereby a person who stands on it will lose weight and tone their muscles. It's supposed to also relieve arthritis, fibromyalgia and join problems!

Read the whole story here: http://tinyurl.com/7rpd5
I don't know how long that link will last.

At least the University of Windsor is going to test the machine. What do you think - another scam, or could this machine really work? It does say "calorie reduced" diets along with exercise is the way to a slimmer body - nothing new there.

It's an easy equation. To lose weight expend more calories than you consume.

Standing on a vibrating platform may consume energy but then again so does going for a little stroll. One of those two alternatives doesn't cost $18,500.

And vibration tends to have harmful effects (ask any chain saw user).

I can't get the link to open. The thread title immediately reminded me of the "Orgasmatron" that Duran Duran (Milo O'Shea) put Barbarella (Jane Fonda) in. She overloaded it.

Here's one for me. I live in Windsor. I'll see if I can check this machine out.

Wasn't the orgasmatron in the Woody Allen films, Sleepers?

To find the link manually google:

Saskatoon Starphoenix and then click on archives for last 7 days, click on headlines and type in "fitness machine touted".

The Excessive Machine .
That sounds more like it. I picked up the "Orgasmatron" reference here somewhere I think, a while back. I didn't actuall recall the name the device had in the film. I seem to remember it resembled a vibraphone / xylophone as much as anything else. Not that I was looking at the machine. It was a daft movie.

I had only ever seen O'Shea as "Bunjy" in the TV comedy series "Me Mammy" trapped between his mother, his religious cousin Enda and his vampy secretary Miss Argyle, (wildly hammed by Yootha Joyce in vamp mode). It was hard to take him seriously as a galactic villain.

Damn, but Jane was hot in them days. Not bad these days either.

history

The machine was developed to stop muscle loss from astronauts who could not exercise in space, and recent work has proven it's use in rehab centers and with MS patients (who have trouble with movement). As a comment mentioned, whether someone who CAN move easily should use this or not is up to you . . . Soloflex sells a "home" version for $495 (on sale now for $395).

I have a friend with MS, and the use definitely helped him. No miracle cure, no suddenly getting off his wheel chair & running down the halls, but he was able to get up & stand unaided after about a dozen sessions, which was a major major improvement (and one that's not often seen with MS).

I also know of at least one top-25 basketball team that says it's helped athletes maintain muscle tone while recovering from leg and ankle injuries which don't allow for other exercise.
