Yeah, I think someone asked him to, and he did it to be polite. It would be awkward to refuse such a request. It's when the campaign stages such photo-ops that it can backfire.

The Richard Pryor Show (1977) 4 ess on tv, 6 eps made IIRC? 2nd or 3rd IIRC had a skit w/Pryor as 1st black pres. and did the equivalent of that (first line above - but much more Pryorish. Fortunately it made it to DVD and may still be available.
