so i'm somewhat new to all this, but i'm just wondering, are people in the arts kind of mutually exclusive to skepticism? or is it just that it draws more people who are in the sciences (and all you MAGICIANS heh) and those areas and those people tend to stay away from art? i mean i know there are musicians like george hrab and the guy who made the andrew wakefield comic, but i'm starting to feel like a weirdo (i have an art and science background and am a medical illustrator).

someone prove me wrong! i don't doubt that this is a false impression.

Artist/writer/performer, but I picked up a BSc along the way. I don't think we're mutuallu exclusive with skepticism, but I am more open to ideas in the creative process, regardless of how sensible or realistic or evidence-based or believable they are. It's definitely been an issue with scientists/academics, who are often frustrated, bemused or offended by ways of thinking that are not their own. There have been threads here where art is dismissed as unmeasurable and unpredictable and therefore worthless or pointless.

As an artist myself I just don't see life as being skeptical. I think because of what I do nothing really seems that strange. I believe that most artist see life as possibilities.

I see art in what a lot of people would discard. I think most of us think out of the box and that is normal for us.

Now I have had other people look at some of my ideas with skepticism! LOL Darn even my own kids are afraid when I get some strange idea. They hate trash days...they are worried that I will have them diving in dumpsters!

they don't seem mutually exclusive to me. i love art. i like to play music, paint, and draw. i find drawing actually helps me alot in math and science.

Life-long full-time musician here. One of the things I enjoy about this board (and the skeptic world in general) is that it serves to counterbalance the greater-than-average amount of magical thinking and irrationality I encounter from my fellow musicians and other artsy types.

Although I make my living in police work, I'm a musician and build and play my own instruments as well. I paint, draw, and make small sculptures....

However, if the "media" reports are any indication, the arts community in general is rather prone to "woo"....Though I wonder if they just get more publicity. Folks in more mundane fields still have more than their share of silly notions.

I'm an illustrator and comics artist with a BFA. Does that falsify your hypothesis? ;)

I was having a conversation with someone a couple of weeks ago, who went to art school in New York, and he said "he and all of his friends were atheists, but then again, most everyone that goes to an art school is atheist." I didn't think of it until now.

No. I was an artist until about 25 after becoming an atheist/skeptic a few years prior. Been playing guitar since 1981. Not mutually exclusive whatsoever.

I have a BFA, and could just as happily become an astronomer or physicist. Science and art are both my greatest interests. Well, Scotch is up there too...

I have no education in music, but I'm topping some national charts these days anyway - with electronica. My education is in philosophy of science and in various fields of coding, I guess that's why you can see me here now and then.

Cheers!

I'm a photographer, visual artist (graphite, colored pencil) and flute player.
We should have a sub-forum to share our stuff. But, that's just my opinion. ;)

yes thomas yes!

i think lots of things that are "creative" are being dominated by people with programing/coding skills these days. big ups to that. but it's kinda weird if you think about it!
