For all of us that are planning on going to the TAM, but have never been to Vegas, what should we NOT MISS?

Please, not Celine (for one thing I can't afford her)

Especially eats! People keep talking about how good the food is.

Try the Spearmint Rhino.

I’ve experienced Vega$ many times over the last 15 years or so. My pick on cheap eating for breakfast is Blueberry Hill restaurants. Very reasonable prices, friendly staff and excellent service. It’s way off the strip. The Stratosphere has a fair breakfast but there’s a ton of shrimp. Good sized prawns. They set this out between 9 AM and 10 AM. If you want to go up to the top of the Stratosphere the morning is the time to do it. If you like ‘diner’ food go to the Liberty Café. Open 24 hrs. It’s one street over from the Stratosphere.
For buffets here’s two top choices: The Rio or the Bellagio. The buffet at the Bellagio has excellent food. Many people like the Rio’s buffet as it’s less expensive – but the food is more ‘commercial’. Usually Fridays and Saturdays the buffets are more expensive by a couple of dollars.
Mexican food is great at Donna Maria Tamale’s restaurant. It’s cheap and very good.
Italian – I’d try The Bootlegger Bistro. Haven’t been there but I read a restaurant review about it and it said that they had ‘near perfect Italian food’.
What to see:
The top of the Stratosphere. You can see all of Vega$ up there. Last time I went it might have been 8 or 10 dollars. Worth it. Also they have a roller coaster at the very top. And above that there’s this ‘rocket’ things that you sit in that’ll shoot you even higher. (Great if you are constipated).
Penn & Teller at the Rio. Standard magic with comedy. But for a real magician go see Lance Burton. This guy is a master of magic.
Places to avoid: “The Forum Shops” at Caesars. You enter from the strip on a smooth walkway. It only goes one way – in. To leave you have to go through the casino. The shops are nice and very expensive. But that’s it. However, depending on your taste, you might like to view the statue of David. It’s in the Forum Shops near a toy store.
Siegfried & Roy. Overly expensive. They use very bright lights to stun your eyes while they fiddle around on stage. It’s like $100/ticket.
The Museum at The Bellagio. You line up, pay $’s to view ‘art’. A waste of Monet, imo.

Hoover Dam. Really cool. (and no, there is no one buried inside of it)

I took a plane ride over the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon while I was there, but I wouldn't recommend that myself. It's too impersonal. You might as well be looking at photos. Take a bus tour and see the things close up.

If they still have it, the seafood buffet at Rio Suites is NOT to be missed.

There's also a very cheesy show called "Viva Las Vegas" at the Stratosphere that is free with coupon found just about anywhere and purchase of one drink. It's a MUST.

Thing about Vegas is it can be done very cheaply. Just walking around looking at all the hotels is a blast and there are many free shows like the beautiful water dance thingy in front of the Bellagio.

I will be at TAM and will be leading the TVTalkshows caucus.

Hot? Lost Wages?

The weather?

I think the weather is ideal for Casinos, that's why they have all that air conditioning, they know you're trapped inside.

I may try to come to TAM, but I gotta admit that "Lake Crescent Lodge" would be more my style than Lost Wages. I mean, I have quite a bit of grounding in prob and stat, and use it a lot. Maybe that's the problem, I dunno, if I knew some good security people I'd have no trouble coming in on the casino end... :)

The Cirque de Soliel show "O" is excellent, and I hear Mystere is as well.

The Sunday brunch buffet at the New Aladin is also very good. Free booze!

Lots of good restaurants too.

It's fun just to go through all the "themed" casinos and see how they've incorporated their themes. The lobby/atrium, and gardens at the Bellagio for example are very good. I also highly recommend the crapes at Paris.

For fun you could also always look for the cast members of C.S.I. I've seen two in my single trip to the strip.

It's a neat place even if you don't gamble.

Harrahs offers craps lessons. Its free and about an hour long.
Then you can play craps for another hour with 1$ bets (its usually a minimum of $5).

I followed their lessons and left with $200 of their money.

The Freemont experience is great and free.

The Coca Cola and M&M museum (on the strip) is very good.

The Ocean Spray Cranbery tour is good as is the Ethel M Choclat tour.

I loved the Star Trek ride at the Hilton. The pool is also fantastic and I very much recomend staying there. It is off the strip but it is a very nice hotel and I often stay there for $60.00 sometimes $40.00.

I was searching for info on the above and found the following with info on each.

If it is your first time you have to spend a day seeing the theme hotels. Be warned though it can be boring if walking and looking are not your thing. My favorite time is at night with the lights. I like Luxor, Mirage, Treasure Island, and the Venitian.

You gotta see the pirate ship show at treasure Island and of course the volcano. My favorite spot is in front to the right. The left side is pretty good also. I have seen it from the back a million times waiting for the Valet.

Buffets: no on Aladdin. yes on Paris and Bellagio. qualified yes on Rio. Paris coffe shop and Mon Ami Gaby at Paris are good.

Museums. No on Bellagio art (a couple of dozen masterpieces from a wide variety of periods) the only thing that makes it Vegasy is that all the paintings are for sale. Yes on the wax museum - because there are no ropes or barriers around the mannequins, you can have your photo taken next to famous images. Yes on the Imperial Palace Car Collection, if you like cars. For pure, uncut kitsch, the Liberace Museum (well off the Strip on E. Tropicana Ave.). Yes on Gambling Museum at Tropicana (lots of Las Vegas history). No on the Elvis-A-Rama collection, but qualified yes on the Elvis-A-Rama gift shop (includes things not for sale at Graceland).

Shows. Hell-no on Siegfried and Roy. Yes on Penn and Teller. Yes on Amazing Jonathon (an acquired taste). Hell-yes on <<O>> and yes on "Mystere" Yes on Lance Burton (his sleight of hand is the tops).

Attractions: Yes, for fountain, volcano, pirate show, NYNY rollercoaster. No on Eiffel Tower (viewing platform is way too small). Yes on Stratosphere Tower, but only on weekdays (yes on the thrill ride (if you are brave enough) no on their rollercoaster). Yes on Main Street Experience if you have time for downtown. No on Siegfried and Roy's Secret Garden, yes on the white tiger display at the south entrance to Mirage. If you have a car, yes on Gambler's General Store. Yes on Red Rock Canyon. Qualified yes on Star Trek experience.

Lastly, it is exceptionally hard to sneak into the pool area at Hard Rock, but it is well worth the effort.
