What would Heaven be like?

If a lot of things here on Earth that make us feel good and give pleasure is considered bad, what would make going to heaven so good?

Not suffering for all eternity might be a good reason, but is that the only reason?

If lust and longing are bad, that pretty much means no wild nights of unbridled whoopie in heaven. That doesn't sound like heaven to me.

Do you spend all of eternity praising god? That's the big reward for a life of servitude? "For being such a good follower, you get to praise god. Isn't that nice?"

Just a few things I need to get off my chest. Tried to ask several true-believer friends, but all I got was the standard "You'll find out when its your time" answer. :D

Sorry for starting a silly thread, I'll go back to lurking and leave the threads to the more experienced.

:)

I would choose the Muslim heaven anytime, where you only get to praise god between a dish of pilaf and the next virgin.

Unless you take your glands with you into the 'next life' those virgins are going to stay virgins

Here's my standard answer:

Having seen all the hoops you have to jump through to get into heaven, I can imagine all the hoops you'd have to jump through to stay in heaven.

That, to me, would be hell.

How are you going to get good if you don't practise?

(This thread was better than average)

Of course I'll take the glands with me, how do you think I'll be digesting the pilaf ?

And now my non-standard answer (ie: the one that answers the actual question asked)

[Utopia] would be much like this world,
only with less disease, less warfare, and more food

Humans are making slow progress in these directions, but we are the only ones making any progress.

[Edited to change "heaven" to "utopia", in order to not contradict myself. I'm too pedantic]

It would be full of those people that you normally shun and ignore because you have nothing in common with them. Far better to go to hell where all your friends are. What’s more I’ll be there in the bar smoking, listening to evil rock music on the juke box.

True. Just forgive me if I get stupid and all. Have a tendency to do that once in a while.

Liked your response about "jumping thru hoops". And those hoops always seem to be centered around how well you praise god and not how you live your life. Never really liked that.

when you go to hell, the party's over. it's not just beginning.

you go to hell to die --- a death which lasts forever. so there won't be any celebrating.

it's not the "raise some hell" commonly thought in high school.

I wouldn't want to go to heaven if certain hateful zealots are allowed in.

Perhaps there will be a sort of gland jeopardy where you have to choose the glands you are going to take with you. I take a testicle and the adrenal gland - I want to be a lover and a fighter ;)

I realise you are alluding to Riddicks post but...have you read Philip Pullman's dark materials trilogy ? It creates a similar hell in heaven.

Riddick, Prove it.

So...uh...which version of hell are we talking about again? New? Old? Muslim? Christian? Mormon? Budhist? Sikh? Or are they all false?

That's exactly what I gathered form the RR-board.

Joyfully praise and worship God into all eternity for His being so mercyful. What else?

Everything apart from that is unrighteous anyway and only part of our sinful nature.

Micheal Moorcock's view of heaven and hell were always interesting. they are both boring. on earth is the place to be.

I guess I would have to choose Hell...at least I would be in good company, and who knows, we could start holding TAM's there?:D

First of all no one from this planet will be going to heaven. In order for someone to enjoy perfect bliss they would have to erase any memory of loved ones who did not make the cut. Those loved ones would be swimming in a lake of fire, tormented and tortured for eternity. If that is the case then it won't be you going but a ringer.

Second, there would be no pets in heaven (according to some and who's to say they are wrong?).

There would be no diversions either, just everlasting bliss (whatever that is).

Your free will will be taken away from you too. Who would sit around for ever doing nothing but exhalting god if they didn't have to?

Lastly there would be never ending fear that a schitzo god would get bored and go postal on everyone at some time. He's done it before and best bets are he'll do it again.
