Miami company pulling candy bags with toy depicting 9-11 attack

MIAMI (AP) - Small toys showing an airplane flying into the World Trade Center were packed inside more than 14,000 bags of candy and sent to small groceries around the United States before being recalled.

Lisy Corp., the wholesaler that distributed the candy, said Friday the toys were purchased in bulk from a Miami-based import company. The toys came in an assortment purchased sight unseen from L&M Import in Miami and included the toys depicting the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the twin towers, whistles and other small toys, said Luis Pedron, Lisy's national sales manager. The invoice said the toy was a plastic swing set.

You just have to wonder what the manufacturer was thinking.

I think we've found the exception to the rule that no one ever lost money underestimating the taste of the American public.

As for why they were made in the first place, keep in mind that just because we find those toys offensive does not mean everyone in the world finds them offensive. There probably is a market for them.

Don't say that -- twenty Britney Spears clones will have heart attacks if they hear you!

What do you wanna bet that these were originally manufactured for another market and these are just the leftovers.

Wasn't that " ... overestimating the intelligence " ( as opposed to " underestimating the taste " ) ?

Watch for these to show up on eBay as " RARE "...

Isn’t it merely an assumption that the toy depicts the 9/11 attacks and a rather unlikely assumption too I might add.

Look at the toy again. Isn’t it possible that the toy is actually just an innocent toy that now unfortunately resembles a tragic event?

I don’t think we would have given this toy a second thought had we seen it before 9/11 (in fact it may have been designed before then) but now it takes on special significance?

I think it is more likely an innocent toy whose appearance now takes on a more significant connotation after the fact.

A slight shipping whoopsie.

I'm totally speechless.

What on earth would possess a company to produce such a thing? Given the number of people involved--from managers who approve the project down to the factory workers who operated the machines--didn't anyone stop and say, "Hey! This is in totally bad taste?"

Yes, is it a hate crime or not?

The two buildings aren't identical, which supports your view.

Neither were the WTC. One had a radio tower on top, which is also the only difference between the two towers in the toy.

One has a rudimentary TV mast.

You can't really tell from the photo--the other building might have had one too, that got snapped off. Was there a TV mast on one of the WTC Towers? Would it really show up that much? I always assumed the towers were mirror images, and if I were making a toy of it I'd make them identical.

You're fundamentally bad. :)

Also note that as further proof they point to the fact that the product number is ‘9011.’

This is exactly the kind of coincidence that often gets offered up as proof and when you think about it, it doesn’t make sense. 9/ll should have been written as 911 or maybe 0911 but 90ll is actually an improper way to write a date in any format I know of.

I could be wrong and it is only my opinion and it is indeed one hell of a coincidence if I’m right but without further details I would have to suspect that a misinterpretation of a coincidence is a strong possibility.

Also, even if the buildings are depictions of the WTC that would not be too surprising and would not be proof that the toy was intended to actually depict the attack.

I think that absolutely is the case (without researching more). The two buildings aren't even alike (as the WTC buildings would be, if not quite the same height).
