Iran Steps Back to the Future

“As I was saying, isn’t democracy wonderful?’ joyfully exclaims a caricature resembling Condi Rice in yesterday’s Guardian. On the left of Martin’s Rowson’s version of the US secretary of state is an explosion labeled “Iraq”, while on the right stands Iran’s new leader holding a nuclear missile above his head.

For me it succinctly sums up America’s failed policies in the region under the faux banner of spreading “freedom and democracy”.

This is an interesting commentary, but one should bear in mind that Linda Heard is a close relative (politically speaking) of the Italian commie b**ch that was returned at such cost after having visited her soul mates in Fallujah.

Nevertheless there are many like them, and it makes me think of our sometimes debates about semantics here.

Racist is of course the common word bandied about in many situations, but also is "Democracy".

Many people, including Republicans and Democrats in this country, think that Democracy simply means gaining enough "political capital" (a famous quote by you know who) to do whatever the hell they want.

I'm not a scholar in these matters, but it does seem to me that the reason we have institutions like Congress, Senate, Supreme Court (and other Courts) and even President, is precisely because the founders recognized exactly what people (perhaps themselves) were like and how they were prone to act.

However, when I read the news it seems more and more that many people think simply that Democracy is a winner-take-all simpleton structure, and once you win you either impeach those who disagree, or perhaps threaten to shoot them.

("Freedom was not free. It was won at the end of a barrel of a gun"; for example, while ignoring everthing else that created it)

The punch line is; does anyone think that what the Iranians practise (or what any neighbors are likely to do) is Democracy, or is it just a clever spin that simply sucks in all the apologist on the planet, and the UN, to think they are really comparable to anything we call democracy?
