What Happened to Mccain?

The kindergarden sex ed ad? Lipstick-gate? At one time I actually had respect for Mccain and felt that he was really wronged in 2000 by Bush/Rove. When Mccain got the nod, I was really looking forward to the election.

Is it just a liberal reaction on my part? Do any here conservatives look at Mccain and wonder what the hell happened?

A couple of times now, Doug Henwood has interviewed Kevin Phillips, Republican consultant and originator of Nixon's "Southern Strategy". Phillips doesn't say a lot about McCain, but is one example of a conservative who once liked the Senator but doesn't now.

You can here the first interview here, beginning around 30:30. That was two years ago and already Phillips was unhappy with the way McCain was turning. Listen to his answers to the questions at 40:04 and 47:51.

This past April, Henwood and Phillips spoke again, and the latter talks about his disappointment with McCain at 43:24.

Thanks for the links!

Former conservative; for Pete's sake, Phillips is a political analyst on Bill Moyers and NPR, which puts him solidly in the liberal camp. He's somebody they can introduce as a former Republican (i.e., nice doggie) without having to worry about him actually espousing any conservative philosophy.

No, I'm not upset with McCain for lipstick-gate. I doubted that Obama was intentionally referring to Palin, although the audience certainly reacted if he was. Based on what I've seen it appears that McCain was wrong when he said Obama favored sex education for kindergarten children, although the point is not yet nailed down to my complete satisfaction.

And it's not as if Obama's been above mischaracterizing McCain's positions and votes. One hundred years of war, anyone?

Welcome to presidential politics, bub.

While it is presidential politics, the fact remains that 8 years ago John McCain was a candidate who was much more approachable to Centerists and Democrats. I actually liked listening to him speak back then; I thought he'd be a decent choice for the Republicans and I was actually excited for this 2008 Presidential race to see more of that.

So, his "presidential politics" from 2000 are quite a bit different than in 2008.

Are you making the assertion that anyone associated with Bill Moyers, NPR or PBS is liberal?

Also, a few months ago McCain vowed to run a respectful campaign. But recently we were told by his camp that their campaign will not be based on issues.

???

Now that's not change we can believe in, Friends.

Nothing on my radar screen here. I think its bunk.

I hope he doesn't mean the National Enquirer story about Track Palin.

Sheesh.

Likely true or they would not go to press with it, but not information we need and not information particularly relevant to Palin, much less McCain. Even with the best of "parenting" kids can go bad.

No, I am sure that there are oodles of conservatives on Bill Moyers' show, NPR and PBS. Have you read American Theocracy? Here's how Jacob Weisberg, no conservative himself describes him:

Phillips long ago left behind both obscurity and conservatism, becoming one of our most ubiquitous political commentators and one of the most left-wing. His biennial books have become illogical, dizzying screeds. And his diagnoses, predictions, and advice to Democrats have been consistently, embarrassingly wrong.

He's somebody the left likes to wheel out to say, "Look, we're right! Conservatives used to be good (back when they seldom won elections), but now they're evil!" He's also something of an airhead, as Weisberg points out:

When it comes to economics, Phillips has still less of a clue. The tip-off that he doesn't know what he's talking about comes in the section about oil, when he tries to explain that not all "proven" reserves are available. Drilling may become uneconomic, Phillips notes, if more energy is required to find and extract a barrel of oil than the barrel contains—"at least until the price of oil rises." Sorry, but if it costs more than a barrel of oil to make a barrel of oil, a higher price won't help.

He was right on one thing: The Emerging Republican Majority, while not a great read proved prescient. He's milked that for over 30 years.

What's happened is the Republicans have no real issues to run on. None. Virtually every issue of substance is a loser for them. That's why, according to Rick Davis, "This election is not about the issues."

If Obama can make it about the issues, he wins.

No, reading the thread, he is asked about this and says "McSame! Only!" so clearly this is not the earthshaking thing he is referring to.

Wake me when it happens.

You ask what happened to McCain? My guess is that Randy Scheunemann happened to McCain.....of course you have to know how to spell Randy's name in order to Google him but here is a brief from another post. Schneunemann like all good lobbyists has managed to keep a low profile even though (if you know what he looks like -- one of very few next to McCain with a beard) you can see him hovering around McCain just like Lieberman was.

Randy represents all the Bush causes and politics as well as arms manufacturers which supports the NRA of which Sara is a platinum card carrying member. And he represented Georgia for several years as well but in April he mysteriously decided to drop the account (or move it somewhere else?)

Randy Scheunemann, John McCain’s Senior Foreign Policy Advisor, Lobbyist, and a former director of the neo conservative Project for a New American Century. A group which advocates global strategic and ideological predominance of the United States through military force. He has been a Republican political insider In Washington since 1986. He served on the staffs of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and as National Security Adviser to Senate Republican and Majority Leaders Bob Dole and Trent Lott from 1993-99. He was also McCain’s defense and foreign policy advisor during the bid for the White House in 2000. About his relationship with McCain the web site RIGHT WEB reports: He introduced the senator to the foreign ministers of Albania, Croatia, and Macedonia as they tried to win admission to NATO, and a representative of Taiwan as it lobbied for free trade, records show. Mr. Scheunemann also accompanied Mr. McCain to Latvia in 2001 and Georgia in 2006.

He has led 3 lobbying firms, SCHEUNEMANN & ASSOCIATES, ORION STRATEGIES and the MERCURY GROUP. He has lobbied for among others: Arms manufacturers and gun associations, Oil Firms, And represented foreign governments Including Georgia. The Wall Street Journal reported that “Mr. Scheunemann's firm (Orion Strategies) has earned more than $2 million since 2004 lobbying U.S. officials, including Sen. McCain and his staff, on behalf of various clients including Georgia, records show. His lobbying for Saakashvili has led to the inference by Journalist Robert Scheer on TruthDig, Conservative Columnist Pat Buchanan on Creators Syndicate, and indirectly Vladimir Putin of Russia, to suggest that he had something to do with Georgia’s attack on the breakaway region of South Ossetia in early August. Randy Scheunemann has been described as John McCain’s Henry Kissinger or Zbignew Brzeniski.

With a Senior Foreign Policy Advisor like this you really can't blame McCain for blurting out we should be in Iraq for a hundred years. It is Randy's dream come true.

What happened to McCain is that he has exposed himself to more pressure than he can handle and it has aggravated his PTSD and it has started to cloud his judgement.

I've seen three CRAZY McCain ads today:

1) The army of wolves that Obama airlifted to Alaska, personally in a sea-plane (but Sarah can shoot those wolves from another plane of her own).
2) Kindergarten sex ed
3) Obama on Palin: "You can put lipstick..."

He has gone completely off the deep end. I have never seen such a run of blatant distortions in campaign ads.

Apparently, Republicans like the wolf metaphor:
