In the many gun threads we've had over the years, there have been a lot of arguments, as well as misinformation, myths and phony data presented.

Be that as it may.

I think a lot of the issues deal with what people think. Being a gun control proponent, I often find it difficult to understand just how they feel about various issues in the gun debate. How do they handle their guns? What is behind their arguments?

So, in the spirit of advancing this debate by trying to better understand where people come from, I've made a list (true to form) of questions I have found pops up from time to time.

If a gun proponent wants to make his own list of questions to gun control proponents, please do that in a separate thread. (Call it "How do gun control proponents think about certain issues?", to make it easy to locate)

Sorry Larsen, but I think everyone is reading this and going "Damn, that is WAY too much stuff to go through."

Quad,

I agree. Sound gun control should be using both hands. In america the idea the population needs the right to defend itself is seen in...
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
I think the idea of 'gun control' infringes on that right but some don't. I also know for a fact the idea of having a gun is no where near as effective as using various legal products in combination that are in violation of the federal law prohibiting them from being used in a manner they weren't intended to be used. I do have a shot gun but it is nothing compared to the havoc I could raise. You could take my shot gun but you couldn't take the creative nature of my natural mind to raise hell. :)

1. Yes

2. Yes

3. Little to no effect on gun crimes; possibly a significant effect on gun accidents

4. In the U.S., gun laws have already had little effect on criminals obtaining guns

5. Come up with a better list of options

6. Yes

7. In my current home, no. In past homes, yes.

8. Not now. I have.

9. When I did I did.

10. It certainly can be.

11. It certainly can be.

12. Yes

13. Too long to be of use in an emergent crisis.

14. 99.9% (From a practical standpoint, it is 100%, but nothing really is)

15. 99.9% (Same as above)

16. This needs clarifying, please

17. From your list, definitely child molesting and rape. Possibly arson and spousal abuse depending on the circumstances. The same for assault (assuming you mean “battery” in the legal sense)

18. Interesting question. I need to think on it more.

19. Semi-automatic. Handgun. Possibly automatic. To be consistent in my thinking, possibly hand grenade and bazooka, though I am not opposed to their being illegal now, either. I need more thinking on this, too. You also need to be more specific in your questions and make allowances for special cases.

20. There is no average citizen, and gun familiarity and safe-handling vary from region to region and profession to profession. But, yes, I handle weapons very safely.

21. No idea. Please define violence.

22. Who said I won’t accept stricter gun control laws? I will not, however, accept them if the only justification is that they are stricter. I could ask legislators how many unenforced gun control laws will they accept before they start enforcing them as opposed to passing feel good legislation that will likewise go mainly unenforced.

23. There is no set number, no, and your insistence that there need be is misplaced. How many casualties would you have accepted in WWII before recognizing the need to simply surrender? A specific number, please.

24. This is the same question as 23.

25. I would leave it to the parents.

26. This is too psychological a question and so I don’t know. Of course my experiences play into my position on guns, just as they do with all my positions. But I have never experienced a personal situation that left me psychologically scarred and which therefore makes me more prone to gun support, if that’s what you’re getting at.

27. It’s an example of hyperbole by the pro-gun side, just as there is hyperbole by the anti-gun side. (There is a middle ground)

28. Care at the time or care later? I always care later. As far as not caring at the time, I’ll say .001%

29. I already am a criminal. I have both speeding tickets and parking tickets.

30. Most already are. See #29.

31. It depends on the situation. I know that you are intelligent enough to know this. Whether you are capable of admitting it, I do not yet know.

32. No.

33. In a statistically significant way? Probably not. Probably not less safe, either.

34. See #33.

35. No.

36. Yes, but even that would not be sufficient, depending on you define “safe.”

37. Probably.

38. Comparable? Of course. Identical? Of course not.

39. All listed.

40. Effective at what? In what circumstances?

41. Both legally and socially, yes.

42. Yes.

43. Not enough info.

44. Killing and target shooting, though there are exceptions in which the design is for ornamentation purposes.

45. Did you forget your earlier question similar to this?

46. No. Nor do I think they should carry swords, baseball bats, pornographic magazines, briefcases full of Vicodin, or lopping shears.

47. See #46.

48. See #46.

49. Up to the employer.

50. What a stupid question.

51. Assuming that “possessing” means “carrying on your person or so near as to not make a difference” then all but jaywalking, though how you would enforce the violations at home, I have no idea.

52. Depends on the crime and the circumstances.

Sorry Larsen, but I think everyone is reading this and going "Damn, that is WAY too much stuff to go through."

Clearly, not "everyone".

Yes, it's a long list, but there are also a lot of arguments thrown around. I've merely collected those I could find other people use.

You have been active in the recent gun thread. Could you make an effort, so we have a much better understanding of where you come from?

5. Come up with a better list of options

If you don't think the list contains options that cover what you think, tell me what is missing.

10. It certainly can be.

11. It certainly can be.

Depending on what?

16. This needs clarifying, please

Let's say there are no guns anymore - nobody has them. Will the crime happen anyway? (assault, burglary, murder, etc)

19. ... You also need to be more specific in your questions and make allowances for special cases.

No I don't, because that would be imposing a form of gun control.

20. There is no average citizen, and gun familiarity and safe-handling vary from region to region and profession to profession. But, yes, I handle weapons very safely.

We can definitely speak of the average citizen here.

If you don't think there is an average citizen, how can you determine the average income?

21. No idea. Please define violence.

Any act that is legally defined as a violent crime.

22. Who said I won’t accept stricter gun control laws? I will not, however, accept them if the only justification is that they are stricter. I could ask legislators how many unenforced gun control laws will they accept before they start enforcing them as opposed to passing feel good legislation that will likewise go mainly unenforced.

You didn't answer the question.

24. This is the same question as 23.

No, the difference is that #23 is about the number of people getting shot, while #24 is the number of gun killing sprees.

29. I already am a criminal. I have both speeding tickets and parking tickets.

Criminal as in having been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor.

31. It depends on the situation. I know that you are intelligent enough to know this. Whether you are capable of admitting it, I do not yet know.

Read the question again: "Could" you use....

40. Effective at what? In what circumstances?

Self-protection.

43. Not enough info.

Britney Spears, with a recent history of drug abuse and heavy drinking, flees several times from a drug rehabilitation center, shaves off her hair in public, clearly out of control.

You sure don't follow the news.... :)

45. Did you forget your earlier question similar to this?

Oops. :) Disregard.

50. What a stupid question.

Perhaps. But I have heard the argument that people who are afraid of living in their neighborhood can simply move somewhere else.

Thanks for your replies.

Claus, I actually do want to respond to your post but today is very busy and I will be unable to access a computer after today (except for a few moments here and there) I will have no access for a while.

Don't think I'm ignoring you if it's not until next week that I respond, though I will try to do it before then.

_95_ % I can't control the movement of my family while my attention is on an attacker. Stupid question.

30. How likely (%) do you think other law-abiding citizens are to become criminals?
Define what you mean by criminal.

_x_ Other:HUNTING!
40. How do you rate the overall effectiveness of guns as opposed to other weapons?

You can't move off the planet Earth.
51. Which actions, while possessing a gun, should result in jail time?

Claus, I actually do want to respond to your post but today is very busy and I will be unable to access a computer after today (except for a few moments here and there) I will have no access for a while.

Don't think I'm ignoring you if it's not until next week that I respond, though I will try to do it before then.

Okie.

I just want to jump in here to say that being against gun control does NOT equal being a "gun proponent," any more than being for gay marriage makes you a "homosexuality proponent," or being in favor of free speech makes you a "racism proponent" or "communism proponent."

Question too vague, please be more specific. "Gun Control" is a very broad category of legislation. Some is sound, some is not.

Generally speaking: Do you favor gun control laws?

What I am doing right now.

And what is that?

The home defense piece is accessible.

In seconds, please.

Stupid question.

Perhaps you didn't understand the question. Let's say there are no guns anymore - nobody has them. Will the crime happen anyway? (assault, burglary, murder, etc)

Don't care. I live here, I deal with the conditions here.

The question wasn't about where you live, or if you deal with the conditions there.

What does this question mean?

Did you become a gun proponent because someone among your family/friends was victim of a crime?

Define what you mean by criminal. Shoplifting is a crime.
...
Define what you mean by criminal.

Criminal as in having been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor.

Depends on the crime.

I'll take that as a yes. You could use other means. Not that you would - but you could.

I think the question is a red herring.

I'll take it that you think it is equally up to both parties, then.

???? This looks like a self licking ice cream cone.

I don't understand what you mean.

In doing what?

In preventing/fighting crime.

Who cares? You don't have a right to steal.

Question not answered.

Shooting.

Shooting what?

With what?
...
With what?

Guns, of course.

You can't move off the planet Earth.

I'll take that to mean you feel threatened anywhere.

All are irrelevant to having in possession a gun.

The question wasn't about relevance, but whether each action, while possessing a gun, should result in jail time.

Thanks for your replies.

If you consider yourself a gun proponent:
================================================

01. Do you favor gun control laws?

__ Yes
__ No
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
02. Do you favor concealed gun laws?

__ Yes
__ No
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
03. What do you think the effect of gun control laws has on
the number of gun crimes?

__ They increase gun crimes
__ They decrease gun crimes
__ They have no effect
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------
I was going to answer this for you but there is a problem with the first three questions. What do you mean by the phrase "gun control laws"?If you mean "no guns in the hands of regular, law abiding, functional citizens" thats' very different from "any regular, law abiding, functional citizen must be licensed to carry a gun with proper training" (that's "no guns" to "shall issue").
Without that distinction, answering other questions - specifically #3 - is not reasonable. I will add that I do favor a shall issue law requiring sufficient data to make sure that the gun can be identified if used in a crime and that its' owner is a functional, felony-free human.

Hm, I'll print this out and fill it out when I have the time. While I suspect that some of the questions are "weasel questions", many of them seem valid enough, and with the somewhat informalness of this thread, I can explain my reasons well enough for each selection I pick.

I like it.

There I did it. Many of your questions greatly depended upon specific situations though. So are you going to go through everyones answers specifically or what?

Generally speaking: Do you favor gun control laws?
Yes, in moderation, and consistent with the right to own and operate firearms lawfully.
In seconds, please.
Variable, from 1 to 10 seconds. Depends on where I am in the house at the time.
Perhaps you didn't understand the question. Let's say there are no guns anymore - nobody has them. Will the crime happen anyway? (assault, burglary, murder, etc)
Yes, but it's a fool's hypothetical, as the gun geni is out of the bottle.
The question wasn't about where you live, or if you deal with the conditions there.
You mentioned America, and that is where I live. So, yes it does matter.
Did you become a gun proponent because someone among your family/friends was victim of a crime?
No. Thanks for clarifying that. It began with target shooting, and shooting varmints. (Stray cats, rats, etc.)
Criminal as in having been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor.
So, a speeding ticket makes someone a criminal? Again, far too broad a classification.
I'll take that as a yes. You could use other means. Not that you would - but you could.
Depends on the scenario. If I can resolve a situation without using a gun, I'd probably do so.
I'll take it that you think it is equally up to both parties, then.
No, I think "gun control proponents" at this stage in the game are a load of liars, and are in fact interested only in control of the population. Again, I contend that gun ownership is a default position, and the choice of 'no, I'd rather not for my own reasons" is a valid one as a citizen's choice. That choice needs to remain unfettered. I am Pro Choice. :)
I don't understand what you mean.
To put it a bit more clearly: I think there is likely a correlation, but it varies with locale and cultural influences. You can't have a "gun" crime without a "gun."

So, what is a "gun" crime? Assault need not be a crime with a gun. Assault with a deadly weapon need not be with a gun. And so on. "Possessing an illegally modified firearm" is a pure gun crime, and is in many cases a pointless crime to both classify and pursue.

Caveat: I don't like cops dying as a rule, so I support the "no automatic weapons" rule as a reasonable balance between civic responsibility, discretion, and officer safety.
In preventing/fighting crime.
Guns can in some cases prevent crimes against persons in the hands of someone who has wit and presence of mind. It won't prevent crime if it isn't used intelligently.
Question not answered.
Bogus question. No one has a right to steal. Anyone breaking and entering into any private residence shoud be subject to being shot and killed.
Shooting what?
What you aim at.
Guns, of course.
Since I answered the "18" to own a gun, twice, the answer has to be no.
I'll take that to mean you feel threatened anywhere.
Anywhere that the beast who walks on two legs lives in large numbers. :)
The question wasn't about relevance, but whether each action, while possessing a gun, should result in jail time.
None.

Possessing a gun, as opposed to using it, is not worth changing what the offense for an already extant crime is. USING a firearm, for example in a robbery, is another matter. Mere possession is and ought to be irrelevant, as noted in the first reply.
Thanks for your replies.
:)

I like it.

A lot of the questions have too many variables that must be considered. But I went ahead and answered them anyways. Hopefully before any of my answers are taken out of context, Larsen will give me the respect and ask for details, as I took the time to fill out his survery.

01. Do you favor gun control laws?
I favor licensing and bans on certain types of guns. I don't favor laws that attempt to prevent law-abiding citizens from owning pistols or guns used for hunting.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
02. Do you favor concealed gun laws?
I believe that any non-felon should have the right to carry a concealed weapon. I respect the need for restrictions on this right in certain areas.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
03. What do you think the effect of gun control laws has on
the number of gun crimes?

Decreases gun crime, increases overall crime.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
04. Do you feel that criminals will get guns, regardless of gun laws?
Yes.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
05. If you don't think it is possible to prevent criminals from obtaining
whatever weapon they want, what are you going to do about it?

(check any)

__ Petition the politicians to implement whatever measures needed
__ Stock up on the weapons I feel will counter whatever weapon they get
_x_ Do nothing - I feel safe enough
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
06. Do you feel safe in your home?

Reasonably.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
07. Do you think you are safer, if you have a gun at home?

That depends on a large number of factors.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
08. Do you carry a gun in public?
No
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
09. Do you feel safer in public if you carry your gun?
Don't carry it in public
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10. Do you feel it is responsible to carry a gun around children?

__ No
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
13. If you keep your gun(s) in a safe place, how long will it realistically
take you to run to the safe place, get the gun out, ready for "action"?

several minutes. I don't own a handgun. I keep my hunting rifles in a safe.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
14. If you keep your gun(s) in a safe place, how sure are you that nobody
(e.g. your kids) can gain unwanted access to the gun(s)?

near 100%
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
15. How confident are you that you will not hurt yourself or your family, if an
intruder attacks you(r family) in your home?

20%, It's very likely that I would cause some injury to myself; like bruising my fist on his face or injuring one of my fingers while I'm choking him. I'm 100% certain that I wouldn't harm anyone with my guns, as I could never get to them in time.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
16. Do you think that it makes no difference which weapons are available,
the crime would happen anyway?

For premeditated crimes, No.
For crimes of passion the presence of a weapon of any type might change the severity of the injuries.

_x_ No
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For future reference. Yes/No questions are only appropriate if they are the only possible answers. Every single yes/no question you asked could be answered with "It depends.". Also, please do not ask leading questions.

1. Depends on the law. I agree with some, while others I view as worthless.
2. Yes
3. Increases some, decreases others, depends on the laws.
4. Yes
6. Yes I feel "safe" in my home, though I recognize that nothing is absolutely safe.
7. Safer? depends. I feel I have a tool that can be used to defend myself effectively, but recognize that by having it it slightly increases other risks.
8. I have, but in general no.
9. Safer, I don't know. When I did/do carry It doesn't really affect how I feel at an emotional level.
10. Depends on how it is handled.
11. Depends on how it is handled.
12. Locked? no. Safe place? Safer than just leaving it laying around in the open.
13. Depends.
14. Close to 100%, nothing is absolutely certain. They might get a hold of my acetylene torch and cut open my safe.
15. Confident enough I think that the benefits outweigh the risks.
16. The way you have further explained the question leads me to answer yes.
17. Depends on circumstances. I pretty much go by the same rule cops use for deadly force.
18. Pretty much any crime that involves violence.
19. Handgun, semi auto, perhaps automatic.
20. Yes, I have far more experience with guns than the typical gun owner. Also I do realize that accidents happen even to the experienced user, which makes me even more cautious when handling a weapon.
21. More than some less than others.
22. I am tempted to say no, but there is probably a point at which I would change my mind. I don't know exactly what that point is, but it is nowhere near what we have today.
23. Same as 22
24. Same as 22
25. 18
26. No
27. Yes
28. Don't know what I'm doing - 0, don't care what I'm doing - close to 0
29. I plead the 5th.
30. Not sure.
31. If I could stop it without a gun I would, even if I had a gun in my possession.
32. No, even if they had the duty to protect me, there is no guarantee that they will be able to.
33. If everyone? no
34. Same as above.
35. No
36. Yes.
37. Yes and No.
38. Yes
39. defense, target shooting, hunting.
40. More effective.
41. Yes
42. Yes
43. Legally, yes. personally, probably not.
44. Killing, though I don't buy into your "intent" argument.
45. 18
46. In general no, I think allowing some teachers to be armed after being properly trained wouldn't hurt.
47. No
48. No
49. Yes, though it would ultimately be up to the employer whether to allow them or not.
50. Nowhere is absolutely safe.
51. Depends. Are they out of control drunk/under the influence or just .08 drunk etc.
52. Most likely not, depends on the crime/circumstance though.
