• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

What could possibly go wrong with this?

I know I'm sick, but I'm just so going to roll about laughing.

Sometimes you just need someone to break the tension. Thank you, Texas.

Lol. If this was 1939 I think there would be a serious problem.
I know that Germany has spent decades atoning for the Holocaust and have helped Israel in many ways so I don't think Israel would have a problem but the idea of German troops guarding the borders between Israel and the Palestinians is counter intuitive at best.

That's actually a good start. I thought at the beginning of this that one of Israel's goals was to force other countries to take a more active role in the Israel-Palestine issue, particularly to send in peacekeepers.

Of course, even if they do it could all go to hell quickly depending on the ROE.

oh that sounds great, peacekeepers, especially when they are German Soldiers, that would be a great sign to show others that it is possible to forgive eachother and work together. I love that idea.

I would love to see a poll of Israeli reaction to this given this statement

Eckart von Klaeden, a foreign policy spokesman in Merkel's own Christian Democratic Union (CDU), said the use of German troops was feasible but they must have 'robust' powers.

the same thing they demanded when they send a ship to fight Pirates.
Alot dislike the idea of sending theyr young man and woman into a foreign comflict just to play an easy and helpless target.

While there are still neoNazis in Germany, i do belive that Germans have change alot. also do i belive that Hitler used extremly much propaganda against his own people to make them folow him blindly. He used the fear of germans to do things they would not do otherwise.

Scared people do strange things. Look at the USA. Would you not fear another 9/11 almost not a single US american would support Gitmo.

Putting UN peacekeepers into the region is a pretty profound and positive step in the right direction, and well overdue IMHO. However the cynic in me can't help but wonder if it will make any difference given the UN's success rate in preventing violence by implementing practical, strong ROEs for its soldiers.

I sort of posted this thread as a joke but I for one would like to see an international force take some type of role. I think NATO would be better than the UN since both Israel and Egypt have already signed agreements with NATO and NATO would actually have the Muscle to enforce the peace. My strong support for Israel is based on its statements that if the Palestinians stop attacks and recognize Israel's right to exist then Israel will live up to any peace process that is agreed to. If that happened and Israel reneged then I would say a pox on both their houses.

My problem with that statement is I don't believe for a second that Israel would be willing to agree to any peace deal that gives Palestines fair and equal treatment compared to Israelis, no matter the conditions Palestines adhere to.

Looking at the map, Israel has taken most of the area's natural and geographical resources. Including watersupplies, but also by creating borders that ensure Palestines perpetual domination by Israel as long as those borders remain. (Gaza and West Bank seperated, West Bank dotted with settlements and the roads to connect them.) Israel will steadfast refuse to give up such posessions.

Why would Palestines accept a peace deal that confirms their status as second-rank citizens, living in no more than a puppet state? Especially since demographic and global developments are likely to gradually weaken Israel systematically vis-a-vis its neighbours. It is quite possible and even likely that in about 100, 150 years Israel will cease to survive as a Jewish state if the current Arab minority becomes the majority. And if that happens, how will the Arabs then treat the Jews?

If I were a Palestine strategist I would keep up the rocket attacks and general low intensity conflict. Keep popping out babies, and have my grandchildren eventually take over Israel by demographic invasion.
If I were an Israeli strategist I would offer the Palestines a peace deal that seems generous now, but is a lot cheaper than what they would be able to take by force 100 years from now.

As Bosnia showed us Peacekeepers with a restrictive ROE are less than useless and can lead to many civilians getting killed when bad guys realize the troops can't do anything if you don't fire at them and only fire at the civilians. Let's hope they won't just be there for show.

Hating the Germans is the one thing that has consistently brought France and Britain together. Bringing in German soldiers could be the first step towards bringing Israel and Palestine together.

Um, how can Gaza and the West Bank not be separated? Are you expecting Israel to project itself into the fifth dimension and create a wormhole between the two?

Have you ever seen "the ditch" in LA? It is a trench through the heart of the city where a below-grade railroad right-of-way allows train traffic to pass though without interacting with autos or pedestrians in any way.

What if a trench were dug between the two, and a rail line installed, and provision for later installation of electric power transmission lines and pipelines made?

We are talking a 25 mile trench, and so it is a buildable thing. Might be cheaper for the international community to make a gift of it than to keep having to deal with the consequences of doing nothing.

In fact, such a traffic corridor has been contemplated as part of peace plans (too lazy now to hunt for links).
