Westboro Baptist Church Protest Protested

It seems Fred Phelps and his gang decided to protest several locations in Omaha, Nebraska. The article is unclear as to what provoked the latest protest from WBC, but they did draw a counter protest from students at the high school they were marching at. This resulted in the members of Westboro Baptist Church fleeing after students began throwing food at them, since police could not protect them from the hundreds of student protesters. Story from the Omaha World-Herald Newspaper here.

Although I don't think that a situation that could escalate to violence is the answer, I am glad to see one of WBC's protests going awry. I despise them.

That's probably exactly what them WBC nuts wanted. Any attention is good attention.

Respecting their freedom of speech is important, but aside from that it's best to just ignore them.

Fixed.

:D

Fred Phelps sees dollar signs whenever a ticked-off (justifiably) Marine in uniform punches out one of his cronies at their bizarre military funeral protests.

I understand legal disputes are a significant source of income for those guys.

I hate every single thing these guys stand for, but as a veteran I have to come to terms with the fact that the freedoms I swore to protect absolutely include the right of WBC to assemble and say whatever they want, no matter how vitriolic or disgusting.

That's why I love the Patriot Guard Riders. They'll show up at military funerals at the request of the family, and make a barricade with U.S. flags and motorcycles between the funeral service and the WBC nutjobs. Whenever the Phelps-ites start screaming their rubbish and attempt to disrupt the ceremony, the PGR will drown them out with revving their motorcycles.

That is an awesome form of counter-protest if ever I've heard it.

Darn, I wish I'd known, I'm just across the river from Omaha, I could have broke out my "God Hates Fred Phelps" and "Christians Against Phelps" signs.

Now we do agree 100%.

I have another word for them - turds. Which means you need rid of them ASAP.

Is that not the kewlest response to those turds ever? :)

Time to quote myself:
I saw the Louis Theroux documentary about this family.
Wow.
Just to bad that LT didn't seem to know very much about the people. Even I could tell them that they are not living exactly acording to the bible (why do I alwas forget the second 'b' when typing bible?), as Fred Phelps was saying.
A small point, but in many Dutch churches, women are not allowed to wear pants/trousers as these Phelps women do.
Anyhoo, I just have this to add: http://www.flickr.com/photos/burstein/2979979221

And just now I see that I made a mistake. I meant to say: Just to bad that LT didn't seem to know very much about the bible.

Regarding the Patriot Guard Riders...I certainly appreciate the effort and I'm sure many of the families welcomed their help but at what point does a funeral become a full-blown circus. It's depressing enough to be at a funeral service then to have your mourning interrupted by lunatics screaming then to have the lunatics screaming interrupted by motorcycles revving.

We really just need a large Cone of Silence.

Fortunatly, the Patriot Riders don't go to funerals they aren't invited to. So if you don't want a "circus" interrupting your mourning, then you just have to deal with Phelps.

And that's why the Riders are awesome.

The PGR only show up when the families ask them to.

But you know what, every fundy in this country believes exactly as Phelps does.
They just have more to loose.

His estranged son has confirmed as much. Fred Phelps has a deep emotional need to be hated. In his damaged psyche hatred has taken the place of love. When people respond to him with anger they are only giving him what he wants. If people simply ignored him he would really lose his ****. It would destroy him. In fact, I suspect he would turn the full brunt of his hatred at the only ones left to pay any attention to him: The members of his church.

Fortunately, there is a difference between hate and ridicule.

Indeed, Fred Phelps doesn't deserve to be hated. That would give him what he feeds on: Hatred.

But he does deserve to be ridiculed.
