I have heard at least three different varients of the story, including two roommates with one in their apartment. So the chance of it being a myth, or at the least a common story, is possible.

Incidentally, last week I decided to get an octopus. Currently researching the equipment and species.

Make sure you check out tonmo.com. Lots of good info there on keeping octopus and cuttlefish. Be aware that the longest lived octopus is the giant pacific octopus at 5 years, most pet-sized ones only live about 2 years. I've been researching this for a while, and when I finally am ready, I'll probably go with a Bimac in a custom 200-300 gallon plexiglass tank. (plexiglass due to the earthquake risk to larger tanks up here, as well as for the thermal insulation properties compared to glass)

tomno is great! I have been reading it thoroughly. I am shooting for a bimac as well. In my perfect ideal world, I would get a giant pacific in a massive tank, but that will have to wait. ;)

Of course, it will be well over three monthes before I can get it, what with having to let the tank mature and all.

The cephs themselves are far less expensive that I thought they would be. But darn that equipment adds up.

A friend of mine had a large invert tank on a particle board table in his computer room. One day while he was working he heard a dripping sound, and looked over at the tank and thought, "damn, I have to fix that" when the particle board table gave way and the whole 100 gallon tank came down! He was rescuing his inverts in bowls and baggies!

Interesting factoid: Most octopuses seem to be color-blind.
I could ask the JREFers favourite question. Evidence? But I looked it up and the cuttlefish (at least) does appear to be colour blind which is fascinating given their ability to camouflage in a colour environment.

I love cephalopods too.

The expression "wearing your heart on your sleeve" applies to these animals in an almost literal sense. Such beautiful creatures.
