Hi all. We recently (last weekend, after a huge server crash) switched to wordpress to run our college website, and now I'm working on a site where I can't easily test out the pages on my desktop because it's pulling from a sql database.

Is there freeware out there to let you "view" a page in different browsers?
I have the firefox web developer extension, which is awesome, and pretty much lets me see everything else, but no way to preview how things display in diffferent browsers.

Since i got rid of IE long ago, that's the one I need to check on, since many people still cling to it. So, IE 7, 6, and 5 are still in play, ed knows why.

I know we can do this at netmechanic for $200 a year, but I'd rather not spend the money, since budget got cut again this year.

Thanks!!

Maybe I'm missing something here, but just open up IE and look at it? You can have more than one browser installed.

Yeah, but there is no IE for the mac anymore, which is the computer I work on at home because it's speedier.

I can look at IE6 on my windoze computer (XP) which seems to be fine, but I know there are a couple of filters in the code that are not playing nicely with older versions, or some plug-ins.

I have no idea what would happen if I tried to install 7, 5, and 4, and I'm betting that it wouldn't be good. :( Windows is fussy about that, and I just don't have time to deal with more software issues or crashes.

awesome. That's a start! Thanks!
Now I can tab back and forth from IE and firefox as I make edits.

It seems, though, that it lets you run your IE from within firefox--so, you have to have IE, if I read this right, in the first place.
Hmm.

well, maybe it was a pipe dream. I wish we had a computer at work that I could load up with different browsers, so we could test this out. Unfortunately, I'm not keen on risking messing up my windows computer, which has to do a whole lot of other things to do besides this.

I may just cough up the $200 to get netmechanic to do this--it would probably be worth it in the long run.
Thanks guys!

If the site is on a publicly available website you can try browsershots.org:

http://browsershots.org/

It will take snapshots of your webpage with different browsers and post them. I just tested with my home page and it seems to be running a bit slow, but it does test lots of browsers.

Also, if you have an Intel mac you can request Parallels and a license of Windows XP, then test directly from your Mac.

oooh! thanks Kevin! That is exactly what I was thinking of!
I will go try it.
