Was my logic flawed?

So at my workplace about a month ago they had me calculate an hourly read to see if we were either ahead, even, or behind in total sales. So one day my manager wanted me to calculate the hourly read since no one bothered to do it and we were about halfway through the new hour. She also asked me to report to her whether we were ahead, even, or behind in total sales. So on this little fillout sheet they have they have everything from last year (total sales for the day plus hourly rates). However, they also post a goal for that day in total sales. Now I would of compared this year's hourly rate to last year's, but instead I took the goal they posted for that day, calculated the total number of hours they would be in operation, and then figured out the hourly pace we should be on to reach that goal. So after I calculated everything up I saw that we were just slightly behind the hourly pace we're suppose to be on. So then I reported this to my manager who took the fillout sheet, looked at it, and told me I was wrong. And then she had to point out the obvious that businesses base everything on last years sales. No freakin ****** If the goal is to just improve this years total sales from last years (even if it's only by one dollar) then don't post a stupid thing that says "today's goal." Or maybe I was thinking incorrectly and "today's goal" is just gravy. I don't know. Tell me if my logic was incorrect in this case.

Compared to last year, but they treat their "today's goal" as the bottomline. If they don't reach it then it's pretty much a failure of a day for business.
